Good Deed Reward

Over the years, I've done a number of good deeds such as returning wallets/purses, cellphones, cameras, keys, TTC passes, animals, kids, luggage, etc. back to their rightful owner. I've also helped cyclists get back on the road and even drove an injured woman to the emergency once. One time I found a pair of jeans on the subway and turned it over to the TTC collector booth (no I never met the owner and she was probably naked from the waist down). I never asked nor expected anything other than a thank you.

Have you ever done a good deed and was surprised when the beneficiary offered you a reward?

I was in the parking garage of a condo and found a passport on the ground. I found out the owner's phone number in the condo computer system and called. His wife answered and told me that he had just departed for the airport.

She was able to get in touch with him quickly and the cab returned him to the condo where he picked up his passport. He told me that if he had gotten as far as the airport before finding out that he had dropped his passport then it would have been too late and he would have missed his flight.

It was a flight to Europe that only leaves Toronto twice a week so he was very grateful. He offered me a $150 reward for my actions because it would have cost him well over $1000 if he had missed the flight. I obviously declined and told him that I was just glad to be of help.

Yes! Ive given fruit (and fruit nectar) to hungry gentlemen; it has always been the same, ripe, firm, soft fruit (although they call it peach, cherry, apple) the reward was always their smile and see them often...

Two good things about this scenario. The passport provides the ID of the owner and even if you couldn't find the owner you could always drop it off in the condo's lost and found.

Twice I found someone's USB thumbkey in one of our library's computer and I simply dropped them off in the lost and found. I also benefited from someone's good deed when I forgot a file at the library with a lot of personal info (no, no nudes) and someone dropped it off at the lost and found.

Another time I found a gym bag lying on the road. I looked for ID but there was none so I simply left it on the road with a note that said this was found on the road hoping the owner would come back. Another time I found some keys on Toronto Islands but they don't have a lost and found (believe it or not) so I left it where I found it and it just so happened I was still there when the owner came back to the spot.

The only thing I expect is that they dont take advantage of my good deed and decide to chew my arm off becuase I wanted to help. Many times you sense people think and try to get the most out of you once they see that you are being helpful, especially when you know they are capable of doing it themselves.

If I helped and expected something back directly it would be the wrong reason.

I think best is to help and build you community and feed it and try to stay constructive and learn.

The best reason to help is just to live a selfless life to give more then you take. I think this principle is bullet proof.

Just because you help this should not give the other person the ticket to take advantage. You can help but be SMART about it IMO though.

P.S. this is the root of the white knight principles. i.e. sticking up for a girl or 'trying' to 'help' her for some sort of return of favourement.

One of my friends lost his cat. A good samaritan found the cat hurt and bleeding on the road. Took it to a vet who fixed the damage for a fee of $400. My friend refused to reimburse the good samaritan for the $400. Although we remain friends I never forgave him for taking advantage of someone's unselfish good deed.

I've had the opposite.
For some reason I tend to notice when cars have low tire pressure.
If I can I let the drivers know that they are close to a flat or maybe could have an accident.
Most don't seem to care. "yeah, I know."
A few though have been downright rude, going as far as to tell me to fuck off. Rare has a Thanks been. It's your life I guess, I did my part.
I have found a few wallets.
Once at the mall I used a stall to take a piss and saw a wallet behind the toilet bowl.
It was devoid of cash but all the guys papers where there.
I made a special trip to his house to return it.
Not a little out of my way.
Thinking I had done my good deed he opened up on me for stealing his money.
I saved him the trouble of replacing his SIN card, health card, drivers, credit cards etc and got shit on.
One time I took my mother shopping and stayed out in the car as she went in.
As I sat there I looked out the side window and saw a wallet sort of under the door of the car beside me.
Picked it up and boy was it loaded. It wouldn't fold all the way. I didn't count the cash but guestimate $3-4K in hundreds.
Where do I go with it? I decided to wait, someone would miss this.
Sure enough a few minutes later a southern European couple come out yelling and screaming at each other. They start to look around the car.
I asked what was wrong. "Lost wallet!" "What does it look like?" Black, lots of money!" I held it up. He grabbed it from my hand, no thank you, nothing. He did check for the money and they drove off.
Ass Holes like that I sometimes think I should have kept it.
My reward was my mother took me to Wendy's for lunch and told me she was proud of me.
My ex and I drove an accident victim to the hospital. Long before cell phones and this was in the boonies. She had hit her head and was bleeding badly. She sat in the back with my ex. The ex wrapped her in our picnic blanket. When we got her there my backseat looked like a murder scene and the blanket was ruined. We left our names at the hospital and the location of the accident for the police.
Next day we got a call from her parents not to thank us for taking care of their daughter but asking why we had stolen her purse.
There have been other events where I have been shit on for doing the right thing.
I am loath to help anymore unless there is absolutely no other alternative. Most people aren't worth it.
Their lawyer will be in contact with my lawyer.

Yeah, there are ungrateful people in this world. I also tend to let people, especially cyclists, know when their tires are low in pressure. I also let motorists and cyclists know when their lights are still on after they parked. Some are appreciative, some are not. On some occasions when I see a parked bike with its red light still flashing and the owner nowhere to be seen I would turn off the light (maybe I shouldn't?).

BTW: Whatever happened to that guy who found $50,000?

Is this some kind of double entendre?

I've found a few wallets in my time. Got taken out for lunch by one grateful recipient. Also found personal property in the stairwell of a parking garage. Looked like it had been taken from a vehicle. Went up the street to the local cop shop to report what I'd found and the owner was still there reporting the theft. Took everyone back to the garage, and the owner determined that not much was missing. Got a nice thank you gift from him for that.

I think my biggest payback was karmic, though. A couple of years ago I lost my wallet on my way to work. While I was running around madly retracing my steps, the kind young lady who found was busy phoning me and leaving me email messages to say that she had found it.

What goes around comes around, and sometimes that's a good thing. :)

I've also benefited from random acts of kindness. One time I ran inside one of those TTC stations that no longer have a live TTC collector, only a couple of turnstiles for tokens and passes, to get out of the rain. While standing there, a young lady said I could go in with her. She thought I had forgotten my TTC pass and offered to use her pass to get both of us in.

Years ago, I helped a woman break into a car. She didn't know how to use a wire clothe hanger to lift that little knob. I hope that was really her car.

Yeah, too much of a gentleman, I guess.Don't tell the TTC. A couple of months later I did forget to bring tokens and asked a male with a pass if I could walk in with him. He said yes (nice guy). It was a very tight squeeze to get two bodies in that turnstile. They are really built for just one person or two small kids.BTW: You cannot use the same TTC pass more than once within a short timeframe.

This would be the best reward! What would be even better is a little help cleaning the juice from my chin ;-p

On the road with Willy
Going into the grocery one evening a homeless looking guy hit me up.
He's hungry and could I spare a couple bucks. All I had was $20s and 50s which I wasn't going to give him.
As I was shopping I noticed their salads were marked down 50%. They make really nice stuff. Spring salad mix with cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, shaved carrot, broccoli florets, fresh pasta, shredded cheese, olives, red and yellow peppers, roasted chicken breast...
The guy said he was hungry.
I got 2. One for him and one for my supper.
He was still at the entrance as I walked out.
I went over and gave him the salad.
He looked at it like I had handed him a live grenade. It was in one of those large round take out containers. He threw it like a Frisbee across the parking lot hitting the upper fender of a parked car. The lid came off and as it flipped up into the air it looked like a salad firework. All those tasty ingredients flying up in the air coming down slowly over several vehicles. Good thing I hadn't given him the plastic knife and fork.
I guess he needed the cash more for something else.
My salad was great, plenty left over for lunch the next day.

Don't sweat it. In this life you meet all kinds of characters, just look at this Board as an example.

I'm surprised you carry 20's and 50's in cash. I pay for almost everything with plastic, plus I get reward points. The only places where I pay cash is Chinatown, TTC and mom and pops.

Old school.
I remember I only had those denominations because I had just been at the ATM and it was low on 20s and had given me 50s after the 1st hundred.
I don't collect points, miles etc. Debit and credit cards are for emergencies and motel rooms.
