Right, but the comments I'm referring to is that people keep talking about how Russell Martin is slumping at the plate. You can call this a bit of a slum if you want, but don't expect him to bat like Tulo. He's not that far off his career average. He's a career average 250 hitter. You take out his first 3 years and it's probably closer to 230. His power numbers are all over the map. He's had years where he's hit 5 and 7 home runs, and last year hit the most in his career with 23, so who knows what that means. My point is that don't expect much more than a 230 average. Yeah so he's hitting 170 right now, a bit under what you'll see but September, but this is what you should expect. The confusion is that you are only concentrating on his BA. JB hit above .260 only twice in his career but so what. That is only one measure of hitting. RM has a career OPS of .750, which is a more complete picture of offence. he takes walks and has some pop for a catcher.
He has also gone to the playoffs in 9 of his 10 years with 4 different teams. That may be luck but He is a proven winner. He is in an epic bad slump (1 extra base hit in the first 46 games!) but as a proven winner with good defence, we don't have any better options. Plus we have him for $70 mil over the next 4 years so get used to it.
Guys will then say trade him but we will be on the hook for prob half his salary which means it limits the quality of his replacement.
