Women are not normally allowed in the Legion, but the FFL created a precedent when it let Susan T r a v e r ' s join.

A British citizen, T r a v e r ' s enrolled at the height of WWII. She served in North Africa, The Congo and in Syria against the French government in 1943, when France was at the mercy of the Nazis.

T r a v e r ' s whose fellow Legionnaires would call “La Miss”, was awarded the Légion d’honneur, Croix de Guerre and Médaille Militaire, the top Military Awards in France.

The French don’t think highly of the FFL

Generally speaking, people perceive it as a band of broken, not-so-bright, merciless fighters, arguably a perception that stems from the mystery and diverse origins of its recruits, who would join anonymously until recently and would sign on to escape domestic embarrassments or criminal records.
