Intact Financial's been working with Uber to develop a plan since at least Sept 2015. Now with the regulations clearly in play, things will be clearer. That is a good thing.
Yes I know about Intact, Uber has been working with them since last year I had mentioned that in another thread quite a few months ago, but there still is no full $2M liability coverage policy that covers the Uber X drivers.

I personally think Uber and Intact were waiting on an outcome for regulations before going forth with drafting a final policy version for drivers. It makes sense. Why would they finalize an agreement if Uber's future wasn't guaranteed?

Maybe.......I personally do not use Uber X and will never use it until they have the proper insurance, it is like driving a vehicle that does not have any insurance because if anything happens not the customer or the driver is entitled to anything as the use of the vehicle for commercial use revokes the insurance. I do use Ubers other platforms, Taxis on occasion and Limo companies on other occasions. I will be personally very happy when other ride sharing applications like Lyft come to Toronto and actually provide competition to Uber as right now it is like the wild wild west and Uber is running wild over the city like the Taxi industry was in the 80's, and competition to Uber is in the best interest of the public as well as other public transit.
Halo another ride sharing app was already in this city and they didn't do the proper marketing so they failed miserably. Maybe they will make a comeback again since Uber has provided such a great base for ride sharing application in Toronto.

I remember Hailo. I wasn't a fan of their service. Too many kinks and I agree, horrible marketing. Reminded me of cabs for some reason too, but I did use them occasionally when uber was too far away or something of the sort.

I think a lot of people are so head over heels with saving a few bucks and the low Uber X rates that they really don't care about the legality and the issues that Uber X platform has and these people defend their positions to no end although they are wrong just to benefit for a few bucks.

But unfortunately exactly like how the taxi industry had politicians in their pockets in the 80's and they looked the other way while the taxi industry was running wild over the GTA they are doing the same thing with Uber and there are many politicians in the pockets of Uber. And that is not good for the customers and will only lead to more issues 5-10 years down the road. More regulation in both the taxi industry and ride sharing apps is what is needed to serve the interest of the public and will lead to more competition in the industries.

This is a general comment not geared towards anyone here but rather a lot of people in the Toronto area who are raving about Uber X and dismissing the issues related to Uber X and legal issues associated with it.

As it stands, Aviva offers the product and an UberX driver can very well have full $2M liability insurance.
An Uber X driver can have that policy but not all Uber X drivers. And until Uber X makes it mandatory for all drivers to get that policy or not be able to drive none of the drivers will purchase that policy as the costs associated with it are really high.

Again that is not a FULL $2M liability insurance.
That insurance policy only covers the drivers who are spending up to 20 hours/per week. (Which takes out the majority of Uber X drivers)
That insurance is also only covering drivers who have at least 6 years of driving under full G class license (Which takes out quite a few other numbers of Uber X drivers)
And this policy only covers from the time the customers enter the vehicle to the time they exit.

BTW I do not know of any Uber X drivers who have purchased the above insurance as the costs associated with this insurance are really high and majority of drivers do not qualify for it. Also as Uber says that they require all vehicles to have proper commercial insurance, at the moment Uber does not ban or limit any Uber X drivers for not having such insurance, they willingly turn a blind eye to it when drivers are applying to drive under the Uber X platform if commercial insurance is not provided.

The only FULL $2M liability insurance policy for Uber X drivers is the one that Intact insurance is working to create with Uber, other than that policy at the moment there are no other FULL $2M liability insurance that covers all Uber X drivers.

Aviva's policy insures drivers only up to 20 hours a week at the moment. Not at least 20 hours. So it's really meant for part time drivers, as the way uberx is designed to operate. Anything over and a surcharge taken out of their income.

A little off topic, but another reason I will only use Uber from now on.

I took an Uber home the other night... no problems.
5 minutes later I get a call stating that my Uber is waiting for me.
I said I just got home from and Uber ride and have no idea what he is talking about. He said sorry, no problem.
Then I get a bill for $5, for a 1 minute ride (that I never took).
I rated it 1 star... get an email almost instantly from customer service asking what happened... I explained the situation, that I never took that ride... instant refund.

That's how it's done.

I ordered an uberX in the US. Guy picked up someone else and I got charged for the ride. I contacted uber and I was refunded the charge within an hour. Nothing but excellent service.

Also, my first trip when I visited the US city was free.

Whether they abide with the laws or they just stop driving?
I imagine they'll do what they always have: disobey the rules and keep driving.

Also, the minimum fare was never an issue. It's the per kilometer and per minute rates that need to have minimums in order to make a livable wage.

One day there won't even be uber drivers:

"Uber also announced it is test-driving a self-driving vehicle in Pittsburgh, using a Ford Fusion equipped with cameras, radar and sensors, as part of its vision of ultimately dispatching driverless cars to pick up customers."

Out of curiosity being so frugal I priced and considered instead of a rental car from the airport to use Uber to take me to my Sqauare One area hotel and then go to the local Enterprise near my hotel to rent. In the U.S. I get huge discount with Enterprise being insurance licensed.

The quote from airport to Square one was about $40, including the extra $15 airport fee.

However, I decided not worth the hassle - not sure how long would have to wait at airport vs just a airport rental. Wound up with Dollar for about $435 CDN (less $US) including all taxes and fees for 10 days in a midsize.

I use Uber a lot. Its handy when I have to carry something bulky.

The only problems I've had with Uber has been with drivers who don't know the city, and blindly follow their GPS system. I often Uber from downtown to Bathurst and Eglinton area and I know the best route to take at various times during the day. Some drivers are reluctant to follow my directions. But its not a big problem, usually they will drive the way I want.

I had a driver this morning who was not great driver. He would tromp on the gas after a stop, follow too close and slam on the brakes at the last minute.

I endured it for a while and finally, I spoke to him in a friendly, supportive manner and he modified his driving (at least for me).

There certainly is a wide variety of drivers and vehicles. I once used Uber in Windsor Ontario and the vehicle was a Ford F 250 4wd crew cab truck! I doubt he was making a profit.

I have complained a couple of times to Uber about problems and they have always responded promptly.

I will continue to Uber.

FYI, still not properly insured! Time will show this, good luck!
