Many reports of it screwing up non standard configs and despite the friendly messaging that you could call support they WON'T help.
Or older hardware
If you bought something like your printer/scanner back in XP days chances are it won't work

And forget about anything video capture / editing related ever being supported if older than 6 months

Assuming that you have a legit version of Windows 7 or older, then the Windows 10 upgrade is worth it because it's free. You can download a USB or CD image of Windows 10 and just hang onto it i.e. you don't have to install it right away. I'd recommend installing a fresh copy of Windows 10 if you can to clean out any crap from previous versions of Windows and applications. It will take some tech savvy to do, but still worth it IMO.

If you simply download it (not installing it) when you try after summer you will be screwed (as license never was activated)

You MUST activate it once
Then feel free to uninstall it for later use

Also note if you do a clean install you will LOSE your DVD/Bluray support & need to pay for an upgrade or 3rd party free driver

I got the upgrade about 7 or 8 months ago I think, and still trying to get used to it. So far I'm not big on it.

Sure, go ahead and upgrade for "free" to Windows 10, and relinquish control of your computer, its files, and your privacy over to Microsoft.

  • Don't worry about hardware incompatibilities, they will work themselves out...
  • Don't worry about all the programs you are using that will be rendered obsolete, it was time you upgraded anyway...
  • Don't worry about relinquishing control of your computer to MS. You'll get used to it...
  • Don't worry about all the privacy concerns. No one will track you... or use any of the information gathered for their benefit, or your inconvenience...

Go right ahead.

(Best solution? Windows 7 and Remove WAT...)

One thing it did was convert all of my photos, which were in individual subfolders based on subject matter, into DATE ORDER when you clicked on the photo's icon. Not fun if you're trying to find all pictures of your kids or whatever. But, I did find they are still in their respective folders if you use File Explorer.

Another minor problem is that my computer won't wake up if I close the screen, it doesn't shut down so I have to turn it off and on again. Not sure if it's W10 related but seemed to start after I upgraded.

Had 8.1 Professional on both PC and laptop with zillions of different stuff (no games). Conversion was very smooth on both. I like the new tile layout you can adjust unlike the mess in Windows 8. I continue to use Classis Shell but can hit the windows button and switch to the tiles which I like some programs on. I also like the tiles on my Win8 1520 smartphone tiles, which should soon have a release for Win 10.

Edge takes over as the browser, and their movie program thing so you have to change the default program setting back for a few. But no big deal. I need bitlocker in the business I am in but no problem it recognized the old Bitlocker locked drive.

My rule of thumb: Unless you have a compelling reason to upgrade to the newest version of Windows, don't.

Let them work out the kinks and fix all the little compatibility issues. Eventually you will find that your version of Windows is no longer supported and that's when you need to upgrade.

Again, you may find a compelling reason to upgrade sooner but don't do it just because Microsoft wants you to.

When I switched from XP to Win 7, my audio card and scanner stopped working. Wouldn't be surprised if something weird also happens if I switch from Win 7 to Win 10.

The one thing I did do when I bought my new lap top was to scrap the traditional hard drive and opted for a 1 TB Solid State Drive.

My god, what a difference.

So much better, faster in every respect. Best money I ever spent on a computer.
Aye Captain, a SSD is the best upgrade you can make to your system and SSDs have come way down in price!
Been using SSDs since 2012 and seldom go back to using slow conventional HDDs.

My main PC, a 6+ yr old Dell i7, has 4 OSs on it and all run fast and flawlessly.
Main PC has: 2TB HDD partitioned in half, with W7 and Ubuntu 12
128 GB SSD with W10
480 GB SSD with Ubuntu 14

Wanted to keep my W7 version as is, so did the W10 download to a bootable thumbdrive, then installed it as a fresh install on the old 128 SSD from 2012. Always preferred a clean OS install to the upgrade to a newer OS to avoid carrying over corrupt files from the old OS to the new OS, thus avoiding any conflicts this may cause . W10 installed in a few minutes and was good to go with no issues. Been toying around with W10 so knew what to expect. W10 is OK but imho still prefer Linux, which does everything I need, compared to M$ but heck since W10 was FREE the price was right.

Too bad Linux doesn't support Studiotax and Media Player Classic.
That's why I dual boot, which is very easy now compared to years ago.
With dual booting you have both OSs.

Linux has a whole host of Media players to select from.

To get a free version of Windows 10, you must install and activate it before July 2016. That would be one year after Windows 10 was released. I downloaded the free update right when it came out, but waited a few months before I installed it to make sure all my hardware and software was compatible. You can still buy Windows 10 if you miss that activation date.

It does suck that Microsoft doesn't include DVD or Blu-Ray player software inside Windows anymore. On the other hand, most new PC's don't even come with an optical drive anymore. You can buy or rent movies from Google Play, Amazon, etc and also buy applications and games online without the need for an optical disk anymore.

There are apps like VLC out there that will play DVD movies, but I'm not sure if there are any out there that will play Blu Ray discs. Blu-ray drives usually have player software that should still work on Windows 10.

Ironically, when I upgraded from Win7 to Win10, my audio card started working. I bought it a couple years ago but could never actually get it to work. Thought maybe it was a hardware incompatibility problem, but apparently not! In all probability, I just had something configured wrong and installing a new OS reset things to default.

Fuck this fascination with social media, linking everything up and making interfaces look like a tablet. The result is Windows 10.

I did the upgrade from 8 and while better it's got way too many unnecessary bells and whistles. And be ready to give away your privacy and ability to update/control software.

I'm keeping 7 on my other laptop. Windows 7 is just about perfect.

I have read there are some serious privacy issues with windows 10 as outlined here: http://www.techrepublic.com/article...y-default-heres-how-you-can-protect-yourself/ . I'm not a serious techie and would welcome comments on this privacy concern.
Most of the so-called "privacy concerns" are bs at best

From your link:
Targeted advertising (most web browsers and ISPs already do this)
Share / Sync WiFi (many do this already, including Google)
Cortana (same idea as Siri, and this is an optional feature anyways if you don't care to use it)
Disclose private info emails / files (law enforcement can already get this)
Location (never private unless use a VPN)

Most of the complaints on that link seem more geared towards Win10 MOBILE users than PC users actually....

It will work if you UPGRADE
Only clean install loses the software (well technically software is still there, but you need to pay through store to unlock it)

Agree.

There has to be some ulterior motive for MS to be pushing 10 for PCs.

I have win 7 on my desktop, can't see ANY reason to move to 10, the last time I "upgraded" an operating system, I had to replace an expensive scanner and a printer.

Have 8.1, not surface, on my tablet, and is perfect for that.
