Child Daycare = Government funded babysitters.
=more people able to be part of the workforce and contribute to society (and generate tax revenue to offset the costs of daycare).
The problem is that kids are dying and dead kids don't talk. Even living kids don't talk because they are so young. We also don't know how many kids are being abused. At least with a camera system it is possible to remotely monitor what is happening.

How ever you feel about daycare isn't the point. No job will go unfilled because someone stays at home to take care of their kids.

Actually I don't think the daycares are run on a one child to one adult ratio so the more people being part of the work force is true.

I think these daycare centres should all have cameras so parents and the authorities can check on what the hell is going on.

Anybody here have kids in daycare? Do you worry?
I don't have kids, but when my niece was in daycare the people running it had cameras set up that could be viewed at any time on a computer if you had the passcodes (they were changed very regularly). This was over 10 years ago, I'm surprised that it is not a standard for any dayhome.
Like the place in the article it was also an unlicensed dayhome, but had years of references, many from people my family personally knew.

It seems to me that the parents of the victim may have been in a panic to find a place ASAP, whether from lack of options or procrastination in securing a spot, IDK.

This is about unlicensed daycare at $35 a day in GTA. That's about a third of what it costs to put a 14 month old in a licensed daycare.
Childcare is a nightmare in GTA and until there is way to make it affordable and safe, these incidents will keep on happening.

I'm not making this about me, although I dropped close to $25K to have people looking over my 2 kids last year, because I can afford it. Just try and think about the single mother that does not make 6 figures or just the average family making $60K a year. It's a lot of added financial pressure.

I see a lot of Filipino nannies in my neighborhood. (Filipino woman with a couple of small white kids.) How much does a nanny cost?

Another tragic case.

I know people who have hired a philipino nanny. There are mixed results. Some are happy others are not. The cost is around 30K per year.

For many dual income homes it is not uncommon where one person's take home pay is mainly covering the day care. In some cases on person opts to stay home because it is not worth going to work to pay for the day care. Others are lucky and maybe have a grandparent to help.

Child care costs are very restrictive on people's options.

Also, this is a very tragic event but let's not paint the entire industry as a bunch of negligent child abusing greedy monsters.

Very common in the Portuguese, Italian and Asian communities. In Brampton, it is not uncommon to see 3 generations of the same family living in the same house.
Yup. There is something to be said for the "old ways."

I mean my parents were way more frugal than I am. In 40+ years my parents have owned 4 TV's..... a black and white, a colour 12" with rabbit ears, a 21" and currently a 24". They still don't have a HD flat screen TV. Same goes for cars..... they kept them a loooong time and drove them into the ground.

A lot of the problems our generation and future generations have with debt have to do with impatience and entitlement. My car is over 10 years old and it's looking rough. People tease me about it but I don't really care...... I'm not going into debt just to avoid those jokes. In fact I revel in it and have fun with it.

My son's daycare cost me over 17k a year. They are licensed, staffed with qualified and kind individuals. They have good meals, webcams and give regular assessments on his progress. Even if it means I have to drive a crappy car and reduce my spendings, it's worth every penny.

Kids are expensive. Wait until they go to private school. At least university is free (I think) now in Ontario unless you are "rich".
I will define rich, but you can bet they will not get a free ride. Hence the maxed up RESP.
