Yugoslavian M59/66 SKS variant battle rifle (not assault rifle).

Cheap, around $300. Shoots inexpensive old Eastern Block ammo. Lots of fun at the range. Non restricted.

The assault rifle designation is the most idiotic name ever invented. You can do just as much damage with the SKS as with the AK, AR or any other self loading rifle. It would seem that the geniuses in the government restrict rifles based on their looks.

Great gun, cheap ammo.
I don't buy the military surplus stuff as it has a corrosive primer. I spend the extra for the non-corrosive.
Fires the same round as the AK47.
Not a gun for long distance shooting, about 250-300 yards and accuracy falls off. Depends on ammo to an extent.
It was designed for the Soviet infantry and up close fighting. For distance they had very good sniper rifles.
Recoil is very manageable, easy to disassemble and clean. The bayonet just adds to the cool.
I only have Soviet versions.
1951 and older have the spring loaded firing pin. The newer don't have the spring and ones that have not been modified can be prone to slam fires if the firing pin mechanism isn't cleaned regularily.
Another reason not to use the surplus corrosive ammo.
I have updated mine with wooden Monte Carlo stocks with the cheek piece and one with the thumb hole. Adds a couple inches to the overall gun which is a bit short for me. Although not cut to take the bayonet a wood worker friend of mine made a successful modification. I have used the original bayonet on a couple but mounted a spear style Chinese style bayonet to change up the look.
Put on muzzle brakes and cooler looking ammo clips.
I have mounted more accurate sights on a couple but the old Soviet style are the easiest to work with and actually pretty good. A friend has a mini 30 that fires the same round, cost 5 times as much and he can't out shoot it.
The ATI and other after market stocks will give it an assault looking style but you ain't fooling anyone in the know.
Nobody has ever bothered me about them.
Long live the memory of the Glorious Red Army.

I own 2 assault rifles.

What makes you say its expensive??
Bullets are cheap, and membership at a shooting range isnt that expensive either
You're not doing yourself or any others any favours by mislabeling it as an "assault rifle".

If the guy has something other than a AK47 and tells you it is a AK47 he is already in fantasy land.

Yup, and continued self-demonization isn't helping yourself or any other gun owner. How about we educate the hoplophobes about the nature of semi-auto rifles instead of spreading their fear mongering?
Was watching the Democratic Debate last night . Clinton was talking about gun control in the US. She said that the shooter at Sandy Hook was using a fully automatic gun . I know that Sandy Hook was a tragedy but really you'd think that a person would know the difference between a fully automatic and a semi-auto . You need a very special permit to be able to own a fully automatic gun . Not only that the average Joe really couldn't afford a gun like that unless he mortgaged the house .

A person who wants to be President should really know what they are talking about and get their facts straight before laws are made that have an effect on the entire country .

She commented that the gun manufacturers are the only ones that are not libel for the products that they make . Sure like the beer companies and liquor companies are responsible for the problems that drunks case . Like drunk driving , drunks fighting with people and the problems that people are having with a alcoholic relative .

What about the drug companies who are making drugs and people are committing suicide with over doses ? They should be sued as well .

Typical political crap coming from her mouth .

Election time ... Time to go after the legal gun owners .

M305 - a M1A clone (itself a semi-auto version of the mighty M14) - can be purchased for somewhere around $600.00.

This is the weapon that the US used at the beginning of Vietnam before being replaced by a smaller caliber weapon. The power and distance of the larger 7.62 caliber M14 was deemed unnecessary in Vietnam's jungle warfare, and the weight and recoil was significant. In fact it was almost never used on full-auto fire because it was essentially uncontrollable on full-auto.

But is one HELL of a weapon, with lots of stopping power even at 500 meters.

This is a significantly more powerful cartridge than that used in Soviet-block countries (AK47 etc) and of course AR15s.

But al this stuff about how dangerous assault weapons are - I would wager that for the average 'run amok' shooting-spree type thing you could pretty well do as much damage with a 30/30 lever action or a pump action shotgun as with an assault rifle.

If I really wanted to get back into shooting I would want to have my own rural retreat to do it at. Gun ranges make me nervous - last time I visited one (not a member) there were a lot of guys there that creeped me out. They just looked kinda nutty, and I wouldn't want to be around them.

If a lone shooter attacks a public place it is better for everyone if they use a fully automatic weapon: they will spend a lot of time reloading and most of their bullets will miss. The last thing you want them to be doing is making every shot count.

Fully automatic weapons are only useful in a team, where the automatic fire is used to suppress the enemy while soldiers with semi automatic fire position themselves for the kill.

A lone shooter isn't going to get much out of suppressive fire, when he stops to reload everybody is going to run, maybe at him, maybe out of the room.

That is assuming he can even control the thing. If he is untrained as most of these shooters are he will fail to control the recoil and most of his bullets will end up in the ceiling.

Back to the OP's question.....I own an Anschutz 1712. I have a target shooting gallery set up on my property. I also use it to shoot squirrels , raccoons, skunks, porcupine, and groundhogs...its a decent recreational indulgence to get into for a few hours at a time

It is no wonder 60,200 psi (415 MPa) delivering a 200gr bullet at 2,569 ft/s (783 m/s) As I'm sure everyone knows, the .30-06 is a classic deer cartridge.

In this day and age where mass shooting happen 4-5-8-10 times a year you would be a fool to tell people you have a AK-47. whether you do or not is another matter, the cops will take you down if you twitch at the door when they come a knocking.

It's a great rifle, even today. I don't own any firearms, my eyes are not what they used to be, but I used to have a M 14, many years ago. Hitting a coke can at a 1000 meters with a 7.62 is something else. Also had a .38 SW revolver and a vintage Colt 45. I carried AK as a draftee behind the Curtain and C7 in the Canadian Army. The M14 was my favourite rifle of all rifles closely followed by Israeli Galil 7.62NATO and FN rifle. Cz75 was the best pistol hands down that I ever used.

My sidearm of choice is the Browning Hi-power. The Cz75 is a variant of the Browning Hi-power.
