A friend of mine who joined the site three years ago, but only used it twice is now being blackmailed and extorted. I told him to go to the police confidentially without the wife but he says no he can't trust them. Do you think there would be a forensics exploitation unit set up for the victims of AM? The threats are coming closer to each other now so he is receiving one every 12 hours. Suggestions please.

In this day and age anyone can get pictures online of anyone thru the various sources of social media. I wouldn't worry about it at all myself. One of two things could happen, man up to your wife and admit you were looking around but nothing came of it, or admit nothing and play dumb. Email addys are a dime a dozens, fake profiles and pictures are everywhere.

Personally speaking I'd never admit to shit unless I was caught on camera and even then I'd probably still stand my grounds of playing stupid and come up with a even better excuse.

Maybe reply back to whom ever is emailing him to go ahead with the blackmail, a bullet is cheaper once he finds out whom is making the threats. The old saying "it's cheaper to keep her" isn't so true these days lol.

That's my approach. Even if I was caught on camera, I would say it must be a guy who looks like me. "Look, I don't know anything about this."

Your friend can say it wasn't him that submitted his email address to AM. When the hack became public, you may recall that the email of the British Prime Minister was among the emails. Several others have written to newspapers saying the same thing. One woman in the States immediately told her hubby as soon as she discovered someone else was using her email address. Having your email among the list of members/subscribers does not prove anything.

He should google “RCMP blackmail” and do some research, then decide whether or not he can trust passing the information about his personal case on to the RCMP.

If his picks that the blackmailer has are ones that could have been lifted from other sites like Facebook or LinkedIn, then he can build a cover story based on the scams that are springing up all over.

There's NO way they can trace him back....I got the same stoopid emails from these idiots. And come on.....no one ever hooked on AM as per all the stats out now...what a sh!tshow of a company.

My email said they will trace back to facebook, and do other stuff...they didn't get any Binaries (read pictures) from AM, just names, CC, maybe addresses from CC card, and of course lots and lots of email addresses. How many did they pilfer.....millions and millions... they do not have the manpower nor horse power to data mine all this stuff, try and match with the public records on FaceBook, nor can they THEN say they are going to send all that information to your FB friend list. Facebook alone would be part of the problem....this is all FUD.

Don't fall for it...its just all BS. Tell your friend to hide his friend list in FB if he is that paranoid...that's the only way they can effectively try say they are gonna release the information to everyone's friend list.

I used a made up name and made up email on AM. Kind of hoping they will try and blackmail my fake identity so that I can screw with them.

I signed up with AM about 3 years ago, big waste of time but I have been getting spam e-mails from different people saying that if I don't send bit coins then they will release all of my info to my friends and family on facebook, in the e-mails it shows my old address and an old credit card that is no longer valid, should I be worried and start to freak out because some of this worry is affecting my sleep?

There's nothing you can do about it. The information is public. The blackmailers spamming you do not have exclusive control of the information, anyone with bittorrent can download it, so expect a never ending stream of blackmailers. Whatever is going to happen at this point is going to happen and no amount of bitcoins will change that.

Best thing is to completely ignore the spam and don't even open it so that they don't know whether they've reached you.

Here's a copy of the email.

Unfortunately your data was leaked in the recent hacking of Ashley Madison and I know have your information. I have also used your user profile to find your Facebook page, using this I can now message all of your friends and family members.

If you would like to prevent me from sharing this dirt info with all of your friends and family members (and perhaps even your employers too?) then you need to send 1 bitcoin to the following BTC address.

Bitcoin Address:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

You may be wondering why should you and what will prevent other people from doing the same, in short you now know to change your privacy settings in Facebook so no one can view your friends/family list. So go ahead and update that now (I have a copy if you dont pay) to stop any future emails like this.

You can buy bitcoin using online exchanges easily. If the bitcoin is not paid within 3 days then my system will automatically message all of your friends and family members. The bitcoin address is unique to you.

Consider how expensive a divorce lawyer is. If you are no longer in a committed relationship then think about how this will affect your social standing amongst family and friends. What will your friends and family think about you?

Sincerely,
Carol

If they had done the work to get your Facebook page, you would have received this message in Facebook.

And this is why I keep my Internet presence at minimum: don't have a facebook account, no twitter, fake email addresses to register on AM or SA, etc.

I've never been anywhere near AM, yet I've received four or five emails threatening to blackmail me. They all came to a hotmail account I've had for years that I only use when I have to register to continue browsing a site.

I agree. The blackmailers generate a mass email from the data and will probably only follow up with those who reply. My advice is to ignore the emails and definitely do not reply to them.

That's a good one.. I'm sure the SO will believe you when you tell her this...yup...its funny cause I had my hotmail since the 90s and I never received this email you speak of, and I do browse my junk from time to time, and use my hotmail alot when signing up to sites or for apps, games etc. It is not my main email.
