And this is why I keep my Internet presence at minimum: don't have a facebook account, no twitter, fake email addresses to register on AM or SA, etc.
Exactly don't have FB, however I use twitter a lot under a handle. I don't have linkedin but get requests a lot to join from familiar names.

It is a bad idea to use your real name and information on the internet. AM is a perfect example. Someone can easily create crawler bots to search the internet and corelate data such as your IPs, time stamps, emails, and sites such as AM. Build a profile and then use the AM as a perfect tool to extract money or attack and take advantage of you.

Let's not be naïve here about the internet... It will just get easier to control and virtually imprison us...meanwhile we will be busy attacking the cops and government for all of our perceived mistakes they are making, when the private industry will pull the rug right under our feet once they position themselves strategic leaving you little choice.

Its funny how controlled and manipulated people are now days....I sometimes wonder if people need this control in order to live cause they do not know how to accept contention.

Fuck religion, fuck race, and fuck politics on this new years day. I can only be greatful for finding like minded people who share this point of view that we are all equal, and it is our actions and thoughts that separate us. There is still hope to forgive ....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ckom3gf57Yw

That's a good one.. I'm sure the SO will believe you when you tell her this...yup...its funny cause I had my hotmail since the 90s and I never received this email you speak of, and I do browse my junk from time to time, and use my hotmail alot when signing up to sites or for apps, games etc. It is not my main email.
I've never used AM and I'm getting the same spam to my yahoo account - the same one that use as a throwaway to sign up to porn sites, etc...

Actually I have told her and have shown her the emails, which always arrive in my spam folder. I showed here when AM was still in the news. She knows about this email account. It was the first one I ever had and now I only access it occasionally.

I used a made up name and made up email on AM. Kind of hoping they will try and blackmail my fake identity so that I can screw with them.
Was it a made up name on your credit card that made the subscription? If so, you're fine. If so, let me know how you did that!

Ignore this. Nothing will happen. I've gotten hundreds of these e-mails from different sources and I just ignore them. If you ARE going to pay up don't forget to send some money to the Nigerian Princesses as well.

I don't remember, but I downloaded the AM data from a torrent site and searched all the files thoroughly for my real name, and it wasn't there. So either I used some other fake name on a prepaid credit card, or they just didn't get my data in whatever the hackers downloaded, or maybe I got some free credits through some promotion and never gave a credit card. It was years and years ago I used it, so I can't remember what I did.

I did find a number of my neighbours in there, that popped up when I was searching for my own postal code to see if my address was there (mine wasn't).

Alot of the data hackers claim to have gotten from site are actually from a spoof site that some idiots log into by accident

It's no different than the fools who download things thinking they are getting free software when in reality they are only installing remote access software
