I have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and overall I'm very satisfied with it. I'd recommend.

Of the two, if the money doesn't count, it's all personal taste. As a former Jeep owner, I'd go with the Outback. (Even if it was the more expensive of the two, which you advise it is not.)

Have you considered the Volvo xc60? Perhaps not the same space? I love my Volvo interior, with the wood and soft leather. But I hate buying premium at the pump... It's not the extra money, it's the sense (justified or not) that I'm being ripped off by the oil companies.

Volvo was actually my first choice until I test drove it - the ride and handling was very disappointing - suspension was stiff and, steering had no feedback whatsoever. The twin turbo engine is powerful, but lag is apparent so acceleration is very hesitant. Interior felt cheap actually compared to JGC. I expected better from Volvo interior. XC90 is superb, but I don't want 3rd row seats.

The top of the line Outback comes with remote starter, and eyesite. Look up eyesite at Sabaru .... when turned on, the car brakes by it's self if someone in front of you slows down or stops. Also has adaptive cruse control. Check out the reviews on Subaru ... it comes out as #1. Toronto Star also reviewed it a couple of weeks ago, and picked it as #1. Insurance is inexpensive because of Subaru's safety rating.
Subaru Outback will be my next new car.

GTA & Thereabouts...
My vote is for the Subaru. Neither the Jeep or Subaru will help pick up women (unless they like safety, granola and running or riding bicycles... The Subaru would win hands down). Maybe save more money and buy a Forester XT? You'd have a sleeper of a car. I know what the Internet says, but I know lots of people with Subarus and none of them have issues. While boxer engines would consume more oil in theory due to the horizontally opposed cylinders, no-one has that problem either.

If you want true reliable off-road, buy one of the just-discontinued Nissan XTerra Pro-4x's (on massive discount) or a current Toyota 4Runner Trail.

My guess is that the surveys like the jdpower one are lumping complaints about the navigation and entertainment systems in with the more fundamental stuff. The entertainment stack in Subaru is abysmal, almost legendary how bad it is, and Subaru doesn't care and for the most part neither do Subaru owners. Some really shitty cars have much better systems.

So if you buy a Subaru go in with your eyes wide open knowing you are getting a great car with a crap entertainment and navigation system.
