Pretty sad story. Seems like she was trying to hold together some semblance of a normal life as her mental state deteriorated.

I agree though -- sad as that is for her, it's horrific for the victim.

Mental illness may be more common than most people think.
In my own circle of friends a few of them suffer from various
disease including bipolar disorder and borderline personality
disorder. A long gone close relative of mind was a neglected case
of Schizophrenia. These mental disorders have one thing in
common--violence is not a symptom. Yet society seems to have
a propensity to attribute the cause of inexplicable violent behaviour
to mental illness. Disposition of individuals who committed
crimes of violence are supposed to be a secondary factor when
the crime is of an irrational nature that only some professional
in a court can delineate the cause of it.

Simple minded it may sound common sense tells us
good people do not kill others for no reason, only
bad people would do such crazy things. And violent crime
should not be excused even if the assailant is mentally deranged.
Somehow people would rather blame negligence on the part
of the medical establishment and treat such crazy people as
their victim. There is little doubt more support for mental illness
is needed. But the same can be said of many other areas in
healthcare. If someone died of cancer should we blame
the medical council for not giving enough grant money to
oncology research? Should we blame the hospital for the
long waiting time for operations?

No one here is blaming the medical establishment for what she did. What will be different, assuming that this does result in a finding of insanity, is a difference in the way we try and rehabilitate her.

Maybe you don't like the concept of rehabilitation, but that is the goal. There is no sense in trying to deter insane people from crime via tough sentences: they aren't rational, so how can they be deterred?

And she will not be getting out until she is no longer a threat to anyone, likely a long time.

At some point, with luck, she will regain her wits. At that point she is going to realize what she's done and if there is still a normal person inside, she is going to have to live with herself, which may be the toughest part.

Thank the Charter of Rights. No longer can those who are no longer capable of taking care of themselves and hve been abandoned by family be committed for treatment.

So th Medical and Mental Health agencies are tied. Until they commit a crime. Then they are in the justice system.

That is the issue.

The victim has died.
So sad. I heard she was recently married. RIP

What I do find interesting is how most are sympathetic towards the perp. She's attractive, well educated. She must must serious mental issues, poor girl etc... Now had this woman been killed by your typical disheveled, homeless guy, people would have no sympathy and people would be asking for the death penalty. Even though he could suffer from the exact same problems.

In other words. When an attractive woman randomly kills someone, the whole focus is on their mental health. When it's caused by an ugly man, the focus is on what an asshole the guy is and hoping he rots in jail.

I wouldn't exactly say that, the bus beheader Vince Li is now out on the streets. He was found to be mentally ill. And trust me, he was NOT HANDSOME at all.

I'm not excusing what she did, but if we are going to talk about mental illness lets gets the facts straight. Paranoid Schizophrenia is NOT the same as having multiple personality disorder or bi polar. Very different illnesses. And there is a big difference between the two. Someone with schizophrenia might commit murder because their hallucinations lead them to absolutely believe a delusion that they are defending their life or it is the rightious thing to do.

Someone with borderline personality disorder who commits murder will know it is socially unacceptable and illegal but they dont have that moral compass to lend any personal weight to that knowledge so it is easier for them to knowingly risk breaking these rules. In the eyes of the law it comes down to whether you were of of a sound mind when commiting the crime, did you understand the actions you undertook and their consequences. If the answer is no then you cant be held criminally responsible, you can however be placed in treatment untill you can safely rejoin society.

No not at all don't take it here. We can all learn from her case. How many people we know and can sense are struggling with mental illnesses but are too embarrassed to talk or have lots of degrees and have to much pride to help them.

Reason why we are discussing this is because many of us have come across someone struggling in similar situations, have many degrees, involved with business and have witnessed many people with mental issues struggling.

I don't know any homeless people, or other people struggling, we can relate to her case either directly or indirectly or know someone who is going through some sort if mental issue.

Why would you put the weight of the world on your shoulder and a thousand other problems when you can't even take care of your direct friends and family. If a guy in her situation went through the same things it would be similar reaction. The reason why I am interested is maybe I can learn something from her scenario. It looked like she struggled a lot maybe I can help someone in her situation.

I feel so sad for the victim and the family and what they may be going through right now. It is so horrible.

Mental illnesses is a serious silent problem facing our society a lot. How do we make sure this never happens again. How do we stay proactive and offer someone a had in our circles if they need it.

Don't poop over this, maybe something positive can come out it.

Its totally tragic that someone has to die for our society and relatives to learn that ignoring the technically insane
walking around in our midst is a recipe for disaster.

Its very sad and tragic! However if you ever have a chance to do something or help someone don't turn a blind eye, and most importantly don't contribute to their problems.

I have helped someone struggling with mental issues in my direct family that struggled a lot, in partnership with other family members. Now they appear normal and are way better and we still make sure we are there for them.

Before pooping on us trying to learn from this ask yourself how many people have you helped, how many people have you ignored, how many people have you crushed who may have had a mental illness.

Yes, it's important to remember the victim at the end of the day.

Just because the murderer appears to be quite attractive in the photos released of her, doesn't mean that she should garner any special treatment. Though I understand she may be mentally disturbed, it doesn't change the fact that she murdered an innocent woman.

Well....DUH!! :biggrin1:

Doubt the courts will go easy on her cause she's reasonably good looking

I'm following this story quite closely, cant find any news on her being mentally disturbed or anything.

Even though cops said it was random, this whole thing smells like a love triangle

I just want the WTF answer. I am open to sympathy, but as far as I can see it is really worse then 1st degree murder. To kill someone for NO REASON is to me far worse then killing them for a lame reason.

Yeah, there is something really off about this whole thing. One of the articles I've read said Rohinie broke off from a long term relationship a while ago. Then this young girl recently married... I don't know it is very strange sequences of events and something smells funny about this....just the feeling I getting trying to understand this.
