Why you'd have to be a complete idiot to take a flu shot

Guillain-Barre Syndrome

They claim it is incredibly rare but I believe they are purposefully under reporting and avoiding the diagnosis to avoid liability. I visited an acquaintance in the hospital who was paralyzed after a shot last year. They have not fully recovered.

I would never dare take it. If its not grown on a tree or in the ground keep it the fuck out of my body.
I hope your GF doesn't share the same view.

All my friends who took the flu shot caught the flu i will never take the flu shot!
They didn't catch it from the flu shot. It is scientifically impossible. If you knew how the flu shot works, you would realise this. They might have had the flu or a cold already but unless your friends shared the same needle as a heroine addict, nothing came out of that need that would multiple and infect someone. Maybe not you but I know there is a fear of needles and many people would rather grasp at rumours that get a needle.

"There's a belief, popular in the current flu outbreak, that getting vaccinated can actually give you the flu, and many people use it as a reason to avoid the shot. A survey by CVS Pharmacy last year found that about 35% of consumers think it's true.

Doctors say it's impossible.

While some people get sick after being vaccinated, it's not from the vaccine, doctors say. The most common side effect is a sore arm from the shot.

Vaccines in flu shots use killed viruses, also called inactivated vaccines."

I think you should follow your conscience - particularly when I'm hunting around trying to find a pharmacy that hasn't run out. (Got mine in a No Frills) For me I figure it can't hurt so why not ? I know it does not prevent a cold but ironically my SO & brother never get the flu shot and both are off work at least twice during the winter but I never am.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome...
For most people GBS is a short term disease and is generally caused not by vaccines but rather by active viruses. There is no causal link between the flu shot and GBS though people who got the 1976 vaccine do have a higher rate. 2009 as the last major vaccine push and there was no increased rate associated with it.

At most, there is a one in a million chance of someone who gets a flu shot getting GBS (whether its causal or not) and in most cases is a short term illness. Of course you can compare it to the few thousand flu deaths in Ontario alone every year.

I've had actual flu a couple of times, in contrast to a simple cold. I am a healthy guy, but that doesn't count for much. I fought it off, but i was out of action for a day or two both times, and felt like shit for a week or so after. It was one of the few times I used sick days.

So, if you are getting older, or have weak lungs, it gets to be dangerous. Stay lucky, or help your luck with a vaccine.

It is frikkin amazing how many people tell me the have the flu
No , you do not because diarrhea is not the flu
No, you do not because your standing in front of me and not in obvious distress. If you had the flu you would be home
And crying for your momma because you don't have the energy nor stamina to pee
Sometime I want to scream, people are so friggin misinformed
If it doesn't come from the ground or grow on a tree keep it out of my body
I want to cry

That is all

2009 saw an increase.

Not 100% sure about his claim but you can read for yourself and decide.

"I have written to you about the failure of the flu vaccine many times, both in blog posts and in my newsletter (http://brownsteinhealth.com/). Folks, there is not a single good study that shows the flu vaccine prevents the elderly from getting the flu nor does it prevent the elderly from getting complications from the flu."

Everyone has their own opinion on the flu shot. Just don't be swayed by Mike Adams. Just google Mike Adams FBI and read a few of the articles about this goon. He just wants to sell his own natural products.

Make your own decision. I get the shot, my SO doesn't.

The old "stomach flu" we used to talk about when I was a kid was not flu. The thing you get vaccinated for is a respiratory illness, and it kills thousands of people worldwide every year, hence the desire for a vaccine that cuts down the transmission rates, fatality rates, etc. It does that, some years better than others...depending how lucky they get in guessing how it is going to mutate. So it is a good thing... it saves many many more lives than it harms.

I'm losing it these days when I hear conspiracy theories about this and that... how medicines are killing us, and how great all the quack medicine is. People who believe in quack medicine should have to rely on that and that alone. And give them all cancer first so we can test all those quack remedies. Maybe one or two might work... out of the thousands that people talk about.

GTA & Thereabouts...
I came to the realization that myself, on my own, am not smarter than entire groups of doctors and City/Region health departments. I figure that if it was truly a scam, it would be all over the news as opposed to 'smoking gun' websites and hearsay. As such, I get me free flu shot.

About 20 years ago my daughter talked me into getting the flu shot. Never had the flu in previous years but did after getting shot. Did that for 3 years in a row and got the flu every time. Never got shot again and have not had the flu since.

On the road with Willy
The last time I had it, 5-6 years ago, one of the side effects was discomfort and pain in the large joints.
Bothered me for months, knees, hips and in particular shoulders. I would gladly have traded a few days of flu for months of this discomfort.
To this day I still get relapses although only lasting a day or so.
Never again!

Sorry, just a little addendum... before the flaming and bad manners start, let me add that I am not a doctor or a scientist. I am a retired underwriter for a large insurance company. Please bear in mind that insurance companies and provincial health departments view morbidity and mortality through exactly the same prism: dollars and cents. This is not, I imagine, the attitude that your family doctor takes towards your health, and it should certainly not be your perspective. Still, you might remember that many family doctors base their recommendations on the Health Canada guidelines, and for that reason politics and economics are playing a role in the advice you are receiving. I am wishing everyone good health and a happy holiday season, even you Mencken. I hope no one here gets cancer, including you.
What does cancer have to do with not getting a flu shot.

Your reason for not getting the flu vaccine is weak at best. These certainly aren't grown on trees or in the ground either.

- Diphtheria
- Haemophilus Influenzae type b (Hib)
- Hepatitis A
- Hepatitis B
- Measles
- Meningococcal Disease
- Mumps
- Pertussis (Whooping Cough)
- Polio
- Rubella
- Tetanus

Only once in my life and never again. That year I was sick twice a month
It's possible you got the flu even after getting the shot. It's not possible the shot made you sick, twice. That's what you call a coincidence.

About 20 years ago my daughter talked me into getting the flu shot. Never had the flu in previous years but did after getting shot. Did that for 3 years in a row and got the flu every time. Never got shot again and have not had the flu since.
If you contracted the flu after getting a flu shot then you would have gotten it anyway. There isn't a smidgen of science to suggest there's any connection between getting a flu shot and acquiring the flu. None, zero. It can't happen! http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/misconceptions.htm
