Door to Door Water Heater Safety Check with "Energy Star"

Got a knock at my door last week and yet again today, from 2 people "representing" a company called EnergyStar carrying clipboards saying they were in the neighbourhood doing "safety checking" on water heaters on behalf of the gas company. Last week it was a pair of guys, 1 being a trainee. The fellow doing all of the talking identified himself, flashed an ID tag, said he was here to do a "safety check" and should he take his shoes off or leave them on inside?

I thought that part was funny.

I told them nobody gets in these doors unless I invite them in or their the police with a warrant. That if the Gas Company was doing safety checks, they'd make arrangements first be notifying their customers in a mass emailing or as an attachment to last months bill. I already have a home protection plan with the Gas Company so if I want it inspected, I'll just call in. He tried every argument as it was for my safety. I then pointed out my security cameras that were recording everything, saying I know you have a job to do, but you're still not getting in and wished him a good day.

Then it was a short repeat performance today this time with a girl. Told her that 2 of her associates were here last week and I told them the same thing I'm telling you, no thanks, you're not coming in.

So beware their at it again.

I'm like you.
No one who comes to my door without my prior invitation gets in the door.

I would almost be tempted to invite them into my house just to fuck with them about my hot water system and why it would not be safe and the Gas Code, etc.

I severely doubt they even market a tank like mine as it not only produces domestic hot water but acts as a heat exchanger for the hydronic heating system in my floors in part of the house.

These fucking clowns piss me off. Mostly because my wife got roped into a gas contract when we bought our first house, which was also a newbuild. "I'm from the gas company, just making sure everyone in the subdivision is signed up for the gas rebate, can I check your bill?". Bam, fucked. Now they show up with all these new tactics and I just tell them to go away, not interested, "I said I'm FINE!!!". I don't even give them the benefit of the "I know you got a job to do" anymore, they can go work at Walmart and at least be useful.

I had someone come to my house for the same thing. Don't know who they worked for but I told them there was no need to look at my hot water heater. Then I asked the guy if he could read. When he said yes I pointed to the sign that was eye level on my screen door that says no peddlers, agents or solicitors and shut the door on him.

Wow this is still happening.

I remember years ago when they tried the "can I see your gas bill thing". The guy actually got mad when I told him he'll no.

I haven't seen them around for at least a couple of years but that could be because I rarely answer my door. A few years ago, one of them tried to push past me to get into my house and they didn't get very far.

Just ask them for their ID, take a photo of it, ask for their bosses information, who they work for, their contact numbers.
That should scare them off.

There's a bunch of small companies that work with heating, air conditioning, and water purification big corporations. They get a percentage if someone agrees to get a new unit in their home, and they target young workers to be their staff.

There's a script they give you that says it's your job to check water heaters or whatever etc, to get into the house and then you tell them they will save money if you switch. It may be true in some cases, like your gas billing going down but your rental fee going up but in the end it cancels out each other especially with government raising rates.

I did it for a day, I didn't last because white ppl don't let ppl like me into their homes unless escorted by someone white. Also the way they work is that you spend 12 hour or more days with your crew and crew leader, if you don't fit in with them then it sucks.

It's a great commission job for youung people if you can sell, much better than a retail or fast food paycheque.

Most of the contracts have the stipulation that rates can be raised at any times, beware of that.

A friend of mine rents his place and he told me they will leave right away if you tell them you rent.
So I tried it and it works.
I just tell them I rent and the owner lives out of town.
Works every time for the jokers at the door as well as the air duct cleaners who constantly phone to let me know they be in my area this week.

I talk to them nice like a guy falling for everyone of their tricks then at the last second I ask them if the safety check was obligatory. They hem and haw and then I send them packing.

I'm always tempted to let them come over, and clean the ducts that don't exist in my apartment.

I have done this on the phone. "Can I speak to the owner of the house" or "Are you the owner of the house?" ..... "No, sorry the owner is not home".

Just say "No speak Anglais".
The problem is when you are sitting on your porch (and they see you) so they know you are home. My damn neighbor porchsitters keep sending these dudes over to my house.
