So here we are... we have what is certainly starting to look a lot like another incarnation of Mariano Rivera in the making and before we even know what we have some people already want to turn him into something else.

No George, over the past 40 years or so baseball has learned that a reliever like Rivera is a different animal than a top notch starter but at least equally as valuable. Why do you want to fuck with what works?

Perry

Because maybe the kid doesn't want to be a closer? Not to mention 230 innings out of a good arm are way more bang for your buck than 80 innings. Do you know your beloved Rivera is a failed starter? You know why? BECAUSE EVERY CLOSER IS A FAILED STARTER.

230 is a lot....but the answer to your question about only getting 65 - 80 innings is that they are all NINTH innings...the toughest 3 outs

gotta love TERB GM's that don't know what they're talking about. Almost every pitcher who becomes a closer is a failed starter
Its not that they're a failed starter, its just their velocity and stamina are more suited to the closer role as opposed to a starter role. And you can only really find that out through trial and error

Rivera became a reliever in his rookie year. Hardly enough time to be labelled a FAILED STARTER.

And BBL never failed as a major league GM.

I'd love to hear him make this lame brain proposal to Mike Willner. He'd have a field day.

Fine, change 230 to 165-190 innings.

Except they're not.
Quite often the highest leverage outs take place in the 7th or 8th innings.

If the jays had more competent starters, they would have no need to score board watch.
Yankees never needed Rivera?
Oakland never needed Eckersley?
Red Sox never needed Papelbon?

You figure the Jays will win every game by more than 4 runs? There will never be any close games?

Does Osuna have enough different pitches to be a starter? He will not be able to throw 97mph for 7 innings like he can do now when he leaves it all on the table in the 9th. He has to pace himself.

It's sounding more and more like you really don't understand the game.

and if you think the organization it not going to look at him a starter for the betterment of the club, your sadly mistaken.
Ain't never gonna happen. I'd make you a bet that he never starts for the Jays.

They tried him as a starter for most of his rookie year, with an ERA over 5 and a shit record, they moved to him the pen. Is that not a failed starter???

So let me get this straight....you would rather this guy come in and pitch one good inning once in while, provided the rest of the team can get him opportunities, than have him come in and pitch 7-9 good ones???

You also obviously don't do your research, it's well know within the organization he's getting an opportunity at some point to show case himself as starter. One thing you are right about, if they for some unexplainable reason don't give him the chance they've been saying they will, he'll get the fuck out of doge to a place that does give him a chance.

As for your comment about "me not knowing the game", funny cause I was thinking the same thing about you. Anybody that knows baseball well, knows you don't fucking turn a good potential starter into a closer. Give your head a shake.

this shows you what a retard you actually are, Mike Willner has echoed these exact sentiments all year long. While don't you email him smart guy??? And report back your answer. I'd to see the dumb ass look on your face when you find out he feels the same.

Sorry AK, but almost all of these guys are drafted with the intention to start. They don't really draft guys saying " this guy might be a good set up guy...ect". Once they don't look like they can be a starter, is when get moved to the pen.

This still has absolutely no logic to whey you wouldn't give him a chance as a starter. Do you not understand you have to go into the 9th inning with the lead for these guys to even get the chance???

Kind of like saying " lets build a team that can win in the playoffs", you have to worry about getting to the playoffs first. Your team needs to win in the regular season before you can worry about playoffs. Same thing here....

If the jays had more competent starters, they would have no need to score board watch. You can't close games if your not in position to win them. The closer role is a great roll for the rest of this season. To saddle a kid like this as a closer because he's good at it, won't sit well with him, and if you think the organization it not going to look at him a starter for the betterment of the club, your sadly mistaken.
The club will do what is best for the club. No doubt, some consideration will be given to him as a starter, but, if the need for a closer is still there next season, and there isn't a player in place that can close, my guess is Osuna is your guy.
I saw an interview with Osuna earlier this year, before he had the closer role, where he said he wasn't sure whether he wanted to be a starter or a closer.

For the most part I agree , but I think I would say reliever rather than closer.

Now 4th in AL in team ERA.

1st in 2B, HR, RBI, runs, walks, SLG, OPS. 4th fewest SO's. 3rd in AVE, just .005 behind KC.

Clearly the best team in the AL on the stats.

Individual stats - Donaldson, Bautista, EE =

1, 4, and 5 in RBI.
2, 8 and 10 in SLG.
4, 6 and 8 in OPS.
8, 9 and 13 in OBP.

JD = 11 in AVE.

Innings pitched is one measure but a starter can only pitch in 32-33 games a year. A reliever/closer can pitch in 60-80 games a year, often in critical situations.

Jay's brass definitely envision Osuna as a starter for the long term.

I hope we can resign Lowe. His stuff is nasty and I'd like to see him close.

Hawkins scares the shit out of me when he's put in a close game. Yeah everyone knows he's 42 and still throw 95 and is the bullpen leader, but you can bank on at least 2 base runners during every inning he pitches.

I have to believe that should be written in the past tense.

And El Chico has said he would like to be a closer in the long term.

Shoot, another afternoon game that I won't watch because I prefer to spend my afternoons outdoors to enjoy the warm (hot) sunny late Summer weather.
