I can't find them - haven't seen them since yesterday afternoon. The babies are definitely too young to walk very far on their own so the mother would've had to move them.

I tried not to touch them and only picked one up when it was lying on its back struggling to get on its feet. The mom seemed really friendly letting me pet her... but maybe she saw me as a threat(?) I don't know but I'm sad. :(

If you didn't bring them inside, the mother has moved them so that they will be safe.

The mother will look for a quiet easily defendable place to nurse them.

Unless someone else took them in to protect them, odds are, she is near by.

I wanted to bring them in but a couple of people told me it was best not to do so. :(
Oh for fuck's sake. You got some bad advice from idiots .

If the mother cat was friendly, she was not feral, she was abandoned. Feral cats will run like the wind when approached by a human.

The mother cat has moved her kittens somewhere (hopefully) safer. The problem will be racoons (and people). Racoons are quite carnivourous and will tear a kitten apart for a meal. Mom cat will not be able to defend against a group of unrelenting racoons. Coons have an incredible sense of smell.

See if you can find them. Call Toronto Cat Rescue.

Yes, she didn't seem feral at all. Very friendly and very clean looking.

I'll keep looking for them and ask the neighbours to look in their backyards.

It's going to sound mean, but let mother nature, and the mother cat, take it's course.

Belated congrats but weren't these stray cats in the first place?

I've rescued this beautiful cat from my mom's balcony a couple of times, but it has a tag and is well groomed, and therefore, must belong to someone.

Is it strange that they didn't settle on the property of the rightful owner but instead chose a comfortable spot in Chloe's backyard? Is it because mama cat gave birth without much notice and picked the only ready spot at the time to give birth and nurse her young?

The only thing you can do now is to look around close by and see if the mother cat has moved her kittens to a spot close.
You should have brought them inside right away, by being inside and you holding the kittens they become socialized to humans. Beyond 6 weeks when they start to walk around if they are not close to humans they become feral.

I think your age estimation is off, kittens start to walk around at 14-20 days.

The main reason I did not bring them inside is because I have a big dog. Once I discovered the kittens, I have not let her in the backyard but perhaps the mother saw me taking her for a walk and therefore decided to move the kittens. Should have mentioned that. My dog is very good with cats but don't know how the mother would react.

My Daughter brought in a cat from the shelter that was about 2 years old, they explained to her that this was a feral cat that had been abandoned as a baby.
When she let him out inside our home the cat disappeared in the basement for about 2 weeks. I kept telling my daughter not to worry and we'd leave food for him.
He finally showed his whiskers, and adapted to his new surroundings, We've had MoMo four years now. and he's very loving especially towards my daughter.

That's sweet. :) There was a feral cat around when I was a teenager and it took forever to get close to him without him running away. Probably a couple of months - then when he was brave enough to come inside it took another couple of months before he would let anyone get very close to him. After a while, he was sleeping on my head every night. :)

I have a cat that has the understanding of a 2 year old child. She will tell me when she is hungry, when she wants me to open the door, when there is something exiting happening outside the window she goes into alert status. ( birds or a dog / cat passing by) I got he from a lady that had the mom and loved the kittens from the day they were born. Exposure to humans in their first week or two makes a difference. Feral cats are not as communicative, there are different levels of feral behavior. From wanting nothing to do with humans to being very careful around people. ( especially strangers )

I know a lady that took in a pregnant feral cat, the cat and her two kittens are around and even the lady that feeds them they will only tolerate a scratch on the chin but get scared when they are picked up.

Chloe, do you still have a dog? If so I suspect the mother cat sensed it's presence and moved the kitties to a safer place. Racoons may be part of the problem but when food is plentiful they would rather not take on a mother cat. A dog is a different matter.
