Has anyone been to the House of Chan restaurant lately? They used to have good steak and lobster, but I have not been there in years.

Can anyone provide an update, or recommend a decent steak and lobster place.

Thanks in Advance,

I have never been to the House of Chan...I don't go downtown much anymore. But the Octagon Restaurant in Thornhill and Peter's fine Dining in Markham are excellent.

If you are referring to the chinese restaurant on the north side of Eglinton, just west of Bathuirst, I saw a sign on their front door that they are moving to another address.

The new subwat LRT station is going in there

Still top notch but they are in the process of moving to a new location further east on Eglinton Ave. W, so I don't know if and when they are open.

Never been to House of Chan but I love Red Lobster. And I don't care what anyone says! :p
Did you know that Red Lobster makes all their meals in a factory and flash freezes it. They heat it up for you when you order it.

BTW - I am not just anyone!!!

Have you noticed that when restaurants move or if there is a renovation they ratchet up the quality of food, and the service when they re-open?

I have never been disappointed at the House of Chan.

Yes I've been there, and this was maybe 4 years ago. Brought a client and his wife out, we were two couples. Excellent food and the lobster was outstanding.
On a side note, the total for 3 lobster and one steak tip in, was $620.00. with little booze.

Wow. That's expensive and I would name other restaurants at that cost with luxurious decor, quiet setting and better locations. That was the price 4 years ago. What would the cost be now?

No clue, never went back. But it does cater to many rich Jews in and around that area.

This old school Americanized Chinese food institution with many pareve items on the menu will continue to thrive as long as the neighborhood doesn't change. Great umami and liberal amounts of msg equals great crowds.

Seems to be a not so subtle racist undertone Titalian? Been there numerous times and there are all nationalities there partaking in the excellent choice of steak and lobster. For the record, Chan's draws wealthy patrons from all over the city as well as pro athletes and execs due to the excellent food and service. It is a unique old school place.

i thought my steak at house of chan was horrible. it was definitely tender but my steak tasted like it was marinated in soya sauce. i was definitely disappointed since it was recommended highly by others.

Their most expensive steak (16 oz. New York striploin) is $60... a 3 lb. lobster (a pig out!) varies but is only a few dollars more... that's about $250... 30% tax and tip is another $75... how did you get to $620? Did you have a +$250 bottle of wine?

I have made it very clear in prior posts that I am a great fan of this restaurant but, sorry, pal, for me it does not compute!

And your remark about rich Jews is a little under the belt and unlike anything of yours I have read before!

You are a reasonably intelligent, no b.s. poster... are you feeling OK? Are you feeling under the weather?

I was wondering about that myself, I go to the House of Chan 4-5 times a year and my bills come to about half of that. We always have appetizer egg rolls, the main course is filet Mignon or seafood, and drinks. The bill is about $350 for four. ( with tip )
