Scherzer tosses no hitter against the Pirates, he's allowed 1 hit in his last 22 innings pitched. Why didn't we go after this guy when the Tigers let him hit FA?

Well, the Blue Jays team policy is to offer 5 year maximum contracts.
The Natinals offered 7 years/$210,000,000.

You get 3, maybe 4 good years and the rest is mediocre to awful. Just look at Yankees and A-Rod. A-Rod is still - apparently - a good hitter. But no way is he worth $20,000,000 per year over the last few years of his massive contract.

That policy is going to hurt them in the future. At some point their youngsters will hit FA and will no doubt bolt if they can get another year or two from another club.

And that's usually not how championships are won. Sure the Yanks and BoSox did something along those lines. But those teams also had a lot of homegrown talent. And look at the top teams in the AL right now - KC, Astros, T-Bay. Nary a mega contract to the bunch!

Boston has a higher rated farm system than the Blue Jays. They have plenty of trade chips if they decide to push them in.
Why would they conceivably do it? So Papelbon can close for a team which is going to lose 90-100 games?! Why acquire an ace closer for a team which will have few high leverage saves?

For now, at some point the Astros and Royals are going to have to start signing these young stars they have or they're going to lose them. And they're not going to come cheap.

And signing a huge contract hurts them now by not leaving enough in the budget to afford guys like Martin and Donaldson.

There is no end to the number of things TERB GM's criticize using their remarkable powers of hindsight.

I like the idea of getting a good starter like Samardzija and moving Sanchez to the closer's role... at least for this year because that would give us a shot at the post season.

Sanchez was excellent in relief last year and the available closers are going to cost much more.

Perry
Why would you want to do that? Sanchez is having a better year than Samardzija

and I also don't understand why you are using him as an example.

more often than not those huge contracts ending up back firing. Teams get locked into these big contracts, and it becomes very difficult to do anything to fix your team. Those contracts handcuff you.

Look at the some of the highest paid players... most aren't putting up numbers even close to market value.

A-rod- 30 mil - having a bounce back year but not nearly worth 30 mil a year

Cliff lee 25 mil -(has hardly played in last two years)

C.C Sabathia 23 mil -well past his prime is now losing pitcher with an ERA of 5.5

josh Hamilton 23 mil - do I even need to say anything??

joe mauer 23 mil - 255 average with 3 home runs. Probably not even in the top 20 first baseman in baseball.

Robinson Cano 24 mil - had a good average last year, but power seems to be gone and presently batting 245

Ryan Howard 25 mil - Anyone remember this guy?

Justin Verlander 28 mil - has not pitched well since 2012, finally got off the D.L this year and his currently 0-1 with an ERA over 6

I'll finish this off with Albert Pujols, has been decent since joining the Angels, but definitely not in 2013 when he batted 258 with 17 home runs.

The Angels get to look forward to paying the big Domincian almost 30 million a year for the next 6 years. He'll be 41 in the last year of his contract. Already on the decline, I can't imagine he'll be putting up any numbers even close guys much younger with way more upside. Oh! and encase money is tight, he also has something in his contract that guarantee's him a job with the Angels after his contract expires.

Anyone care to discuss the Tampa Bay Rays and how much there payroll is?

We're doing okay you guys. We beat Orioles today in rubber match and we win 4 of our last 5 games.

But those dreaded A-Roids keep winning too :frusty:

O's up 7-0 in the 2nd inning. Looks like Copeland can't cut it in the Bigs.

Looks like we need an extra starter or 2 anyway, just as insurance for someone going on the DL.
