I know it's a bit early but am starting to make plans for my garden this summer. I want fairly easy plants to grow without too much maintenance...sometimes I might be out of town for a week or so.


In the past I've been successful with tomatoes, lettuce, zucchini, squash, cilantro, parsley..... Want to try artichokes this summer but have never grown them before. I know there is a lot of info out there but wanted some feedback from some of you! What do you guys (or gals) grow? And any tips....?

Two things I love growing are cucumbers (I could eat them every day) and jalapenos (looove fresh Jalapenos, and will go well with the cilantro). I also do a lot of basil in the herb garden.

I do a lot of soil and drainage prep, water in the early morning, and simply fertilize regularly.

Where are you growing your veggies? In a back garden or in planters on a condo terrace? Do you want to start your seedlings now. Do you have a kitty?

I have a big backyard. No cats of my own but there are a few strays....they peed on my zucchinis last year.

Green beans , yellow beans ( bush plant or pole plant ) . Bush plants take up a lot of room . Pole plants are good because you can put up string from the pole and the plants will follow the string. If you have too many at harvest time you can blanch then freeze them . Onions , red or yellow . They will last along time in your fruit cellar if you have one . Cucumbers are a great addition to a light summer salad .

Put up a small chicken wire fence around the garden to keep the critters away .

Yes, was thinking of doing green beans along the fence. :)

You can start your seedlings now using 2 liter pop bottles. Put it in a sunny window or use a grow light. You can start a plant with the cut off top of a carrot or the cut off bottom of a celery.
Last year I grew some nice cat nip for my kittie and kitty friends.

My mom has a big garden in her back yard. I only help to till it. She has a problem though. Deer. May have to sprinkle Critter Ridder or Coyote Pee around it. The deer eat her veggies and she's upset. Hopefully, she doesn't have to get a fence installed.

Tomatoes! Of all the vegetables, tomatoes are best fresh picked, and suffer most from cold storage. Corn is the same, but I doubt you have the space for it. My other essential is fresh herbs. Basil for the tomatoes, thyme for stews....

If you grow herbs or catnip, start them off in the inverted pop bottles and then transfer them to a pot. Us a 4 liter water bottle, cut off the bottom and poke some holes in it. You cover the herb in the pot and make a mini greenhouse. Put it in the sun. The plant is getting sun and moisture in this humid greenhouse. The herb will grow, but there seems to be a big growth spurt after a few weeks in that environment.

Do you guys eat what you grow? If yes, are you not concerned about contaminated soil?

The soil to-day is not the same pristine soil of our Irish ancestors who grew cabbage in their gardens (hence, the name "Cabbagetown").

Aren't the vegetables from the store also grown in similar soil? Had my soil tested before and it seems to be good. (no dirty remarks!)

I don't mind a big growth spurt once in a while.
