Never understood people who claim to be "team fans"
In the old days it meant something since players never got traded
But in this days NHL where maybe 10 current players will retire on same teams it seems stupid

Plus the obvious fact that is you are a hockey fan, why would you insist on watching a horrible team lose? (unless into s&m)
I mean if Leafs are shit, change the channel and watch a better team
I would never sit though some crap Leafs vs Coyotes game
Anything is better than that

Toronto is the centre of the hockey world but we have only one professional team ! I was a Leaf fan but I would love a second team that we can rally around and actually attend a game. Toronto could support two teams and I'm guessing it would give an incentive for the Leaf management to earn field a decent team instead of just relying on the faithful to keep filling the seats.
Where did this idea ever come from???
Not only has a second team died multiple times in this city, even the Leafs are starting to drop with this decade of futility (fun fact, you are watching the worst incarnation of the Leafs ever; not since the 1920s had the Leafs even missed the playoffs so often)

Only a person living in Toronto could ever claim the city is center of the world
Get ready for more Canadian team deaths with dropping loonie, any bets on which one moves to Las Vegas?

If you count success as making it to but losing in the playoffs then the Habs have had way more success than the Leafs. If you judge the success of a team solely based on winning the Cup, then Montreal has sucked just as much as the Leafs in the last 21 years.

Lets not forget that the Leafs probably had the best team in 92/93 but if it were not for the infamous non-call... Toronto just may have gone on to win the Cup that year. Obviously we'll never know but who wouldn't have loved to see Toronto vs. Montreal in the final.

Further to "Canada's Team" I think you'd find TML would beat the Canadiens hands downif they were playing as well as them. All you have to do is look at the number of Leafs jerseys in the crowd any time they play a team on the road in Canada or the US for that matter.
lol
Until that day, we'll just have to wait and see ;)

Can someone explain to me why so many of you claim that "Toronto is the center of the universe, I mean, hockey world". What do you mean by that? I mean they can barely reach the play-offs (once since 2004-2005 ?) and haven't wan a cup in almost 40 years.

Because the Hockey Hall of Fame is in Toronto?

Even as a die-hard Leafs fan I must dispute this ...That call came in game 6, (yes, the Leafs were robbed) but they got spanked by Gretzky in game 7. Montreal then beat LA in 5 games with Patrick Roy putting on a historic overtime playoff run of 11 wins. He was the best goalie in the world at the time, and I have my doubts the Leafs would have won that series ...but I would have given anything to see that.

Miami, you dumbass
Die-hard Leaf fan - but secretly very impressed with MTL.
Every few years, they tank. And then rebuild. Simple plan, right?
You'd think those shit-heads at the ACC would make note.

Certainly a non hockey fan
There are MANY ways the Canadiens success dwarfs the Leafs (cups being just one of them; heck every decade Montreal had more success EXCEPT for a power run by Leafs back in the 1940s)
Both teams joined NHL in same year

Wins
Montreal 3252
Toronto 2762

Playoffs
Montreal 81
Toronto 65

Division Champion
Montreal 36
Toronto 8 (lol)

Conference Champion
Montreal 3
Toronto 0

Stanley Cups
Montreal 23
Toronto 13

100 Point Seasons
Montreal 17
Toronto 3 (lol and ALL only happened with advent of the "loser point", Leafs never had a true 100 point season)

Futile Years (worse than 40% won)
Toronto 11 (hey the Leafs won something... oh wait...)
Montreal 4

Every single statistical measure the Leafs just plain suck (excluding the 40s)

Montreal has always had better scouting.

Geeeze, when you put it like that... Still not cheering for the Habs though. lol

I read somewhere years ago, that our beloved Toronto Maple Leafs were like the New York Yankees of the Canadian NHL.

IOW, the Maple Leafs were Canada's team, not Les Habitants. This could still be true nation wide (maybe because of English Canada?), however, I have cousins who are die hard Hab fans. My allegiance though to Team Blue despite my frustration is immutable. However, Leaf fans should complain like Hab fans when things go sour. We're suckers.

You could probably convince me to change my allegiance during a session with you ma belle, but I digress.

Also, Lord Stanley Cup's home is Ontario I believe (Lord Stanley of Preston was the first Governor General of Canada and was based in Ottawa).

Ironically, per Wikipedia, Lord Stanley was from England, and the first hockey game he witessed was at the Montreal Winter Fair. The first team that won the cup, who were part of an amateur league, was the Montreal HC (for Hockey Club). Go figure huh?

Out of all the dumb statements on Terb - and there are a lot of them - this is easily top 5. The point, is that the Leafs aren't playing as well as the Habs. Historically, no team in the league has played as well as the Habs.
