Trademark infringement?
There was a pre-existing company that had the Lexis trademark in the US before Toyota came out with their Lexus brand.
The reason for this offer was to ward off a lawsuit from the other company with the similar name. Toyota/Lexus figured they would have to spend that much on legal expense anyways so they made the company the offer of $10 Million and free cars. They wanted 10 times that amount. Toyota/Lexus went to court and won, the court decision was that Lexus and Lexis were two different names. The other company got nothing.
