These robberies and/or assaults happen all the time, maybe daily in the GTA. Could be under the new law this girl felt safe to call the police, and we now see it in the news. I'm not generally happy with the new law, but I do like the part that makes it so the girls are not seen as criminals.
I agree.

At the same rate, NOBODY should be subject to this kind of violence. The Conservatives' answer is that this woman should never have been doing this to begin with. I think the correct answer is that we need a legal framework that doesn't push prostitution into the fringes of society where the sex workers are easy targets.

Assault and robbery were always a serious crime, and should've been reported to the police before, but maybe due to ignorance of the law or contact info of certain/key police officers that assisted SPs, it wasn't.
"ignorance of the law" or "lack of contact info"; whatever. Many escorts had the mistaken belief that the big bad cops would arrest them, even though they were reporting robbery/assault. Now that fear has been removed.

In this lady's case I doubt it mattered one way or the other. She was violently beaten/raped and needed help.

This is not good !!! Not only for that defenseless young lady, but for the escorting business in general.
The politicians will use this as leverage, especially if she was sexually assaulted !!! and this had nothing to do with the lack of advertising.

Not that the old law would had made any difference

but a fully legal prostitution system, surely yes. This girl would had been working on a proper brothel with enough security to avoid this kind of incident
I agree, don't know that the reporting of this crime relates to C36, more likely was reported because of how serious the assault was. or the assault could have been reported because of all the girls coming out in the Jian Ghomeshi assault case. We will likely never know.

Not all girls want to work for someone else, in a brothel, MP, etc, as they like the freedom of working on their own and/or keeping all the money. Also not all girls can make the cut to work for someone else. If the girl can collect $60 per half, there is little money available for phone staff and manager.

Agreed KBear....... It does not matter what the law is at any time if legal or illegal to escort.... There will always be independent SPs that will get robbed/attacked etc. as a matter of fact even agency girls will ... This has nothing to do with the law and if she can get people to protect her or not .. There will always be females working alone and it's sad that these losers go around targeting them, and it will go on and on always no matter what is going on with the law.

The new law (i) makes it harder for escorts to screen clients. (ii) it makes it harder for escorts to find clients so they may be pressured to take chances on clients whom they would not normally accommodate. So yes, unfortunately with c36 now in full swing we are likely to see more of these violent attacks on sex trade workers.

C'mon Titalian, you're better than this. Focus on the horror this lady went through and her future well being. Why not leave politics out of this for now.

Politicians COULD point to something like this and say that the laws are good laws, and that it will help protect escorts from this type of crime. We all know it won't prevent this from happening anymore than rape, or theft laws are deterrents.
I'm no expert, but this type of crime sounds to me like the work of a pimp and his "gang"...hang'em I say.

i bet police called in a favour to get main stream publicity for this. its part of the attack on advertising starting with backpages.

I think we all realise this, and of course, this has always been, the sad truth about this business. I believe the most vulnerable, are the ones just starting out.

If you have seen the clips, there was a forensic unit parked outside the hotel, involved in investigating the RAPE of this poor girl, and naturally that will draw media attention. That has NOTHING to do with the bill or the cops calling in favors... this has to do with the fact that a woman was brutally attacked and assaulted.

Every escort has their own threshold for client screening.

Some implement very strict boundaries and/or invest a bit of time corresponding/verifying prior to booking appts. Others not so much and will even book with whomever happens to simply text them; Often double booking, ensuring a revolving door so long as they're booked solid.

This has always been and ever will be. C-36 notwithstanding.

Fact: The sex trade has always been and will always be more prone to violence than any other industry.

So rather than lament about politicians' motives and c-36 and how they must be rubbing their hands together with glee; I just wish this poor lady well and hope she recovers.

I agree.
Sex workers are the perfect targets for people that want to take advantage of others on the fringes. The aim of the old laws being struck down was to prevent shit like this.
