About 2 weeks ago while on night i was patrolling the 401...when a HD pickup rolled past me ....overloaded in the box.with .shingles pulling a trailer ...over loaded with shingles too with a small bobcat on it to boot...1 tire was wobbling ready to break off..1 of the ramps they use for loading the bobcat was dragging...sparks everywhere!! Come - a - longs used for tying down the bobcat were too loose bobcat was shifting back and forth as he accelerated or braked..doing about 125 kmh in the hammer lane....I flipped my lights on sped up to match his speed and tried my damndest to get his attention...but...yup he was on his phone!!
So I took my spot light gave him a quick flash to get his attention and told him to pull over his load was loose
of course he ignored me so I radioed ahead informing LE he was coming their way and tried to slowly edge him over but needing to push it to 130 to get ahead of him to block..him.
End result ....got him off the highway and he faces major fines for his action
I get a thumbs up from LE..I get a hearty ...ATTA BOY from bosses and so on
...

NOW THE WTF PART. ..!!!

i get an email ...meeting request last night
show up today for it first thing this morning.......and.....
It's a DISCIPLINE MEETING. ....for THAT INCIDENT. ..Why?!!!!!!

Our vehicles are GPS' D. ..and it pings at 120...and it pinged me doing 132...SO..!!!
So..you broke company policy by speeding...
I said ...are you kidding me!!!!!

I prevent a ..POSSIBLY catastrophic accident and you're gonna ream me for this!

My supervisor was livid but HR was being their usual dick and said
policy is policy ...no exceptions

Well thank you VERY MUCH!!
so now I gotta behave or its a 3 day walk in the park next!!!!

Unfucking believeable..

no wonder I drink:frusty:

Your responsibility ends when you notify the police. Trying to stop the vehicle or apprehend the driver is stupid.
And if something happened between me notifying LE and him actually being stopped???
Sorry...but if that's stupid then so be it...but I slept good that morning knowing nothing happened on my watch

Except it wasn't "your watch".
Actually fuji...yeah it was/is my watch..my responsibility... when I'm working
my ass on the line anytime something happens within my patrol area that was a result of highway or road conditions that I was aware of...
In this case...I knew it was a hazard so I acted had I not and something happened I'm the one who has to go to court ...or an inquest and explain my part in it

Another wannabe cop. You did your thing by calling LE. You should have just backed off, followed the guy, and provided input to their report. Speeding up to 130+ and trying to 'edge him over' is the stupidest and most dangerous thing you could have done. If telling yourself you're a hero helps you sleep at night, that's cool, but IMO you still still deserved the ass-kicking from your bosses.

I have called LE a few times to report a dangerous driver or situation and once they get the location of the offending vehicle they instruct me to back off and do not follow the vehicle.

I don't know what job the OP has but it can't be LE or MTO compliance cuz they can stop trucks with their flashing lights too.

It's obvious from his disciplinary action that he went beyond the call of duty.

He must understand that his employer's INSURER would not like what he did either.

It wasn't the fact I got reprimanded ....did I deserve it ?..probably
it was the fact that I got kudos from the bosses and then got bent over the same fucking table!
will I think twice about doing it again?..for a second or 2.. maybe...but had the end result been different and far worse?
And something did happen?
How do I as a father husband and newly minted grandfather look at the family of someone who was hurt or killed because of my inaction?

Are you dreaming? You did enough by radioing LE ahead. Anything else might have put you or others at risk. If that truck was forced to slow down by your maneuver, and something fell off his trailer striking another vehicle, you'd be sued if not charged too.

Don't forget, your bosses' CVOR record and rating would be detrimentally affected if something bad happened by your direct involvement (I get involved in my employers' CVOR shit)

Fuck your bosses, you did the right thing. I see this kind of shit on the road all the time and there are never any opp or mto enforcement around. Improperly loaded trailers and insecure loads are definitely a hazard out there.
For all those who have said you shouldn't have continued chasing after him once you called LE, imagine your driving behind this guy and the bobcat broke free, fell off the trailer and you ran into it. Your going to be severely injured or maybe killed. If not you maybe the guy in front of you then you into him, get the picture. These people need to be fined big and taken off the road.

...and what if during your "watch", and "heroic" actions...you manage to get the other guy off road, he hits, injures himself, you will be guilty of negligent driving causing body harm, and civil suits...endangering yourself or other defeats the purpose. You notified LE, they are the pros...let them deal with it. Good God you are in Canada. The other driver could have a gun if in the US of A. Even during a citizen's arrest if you cause harm....your ass will be handed back to you in aluminum wrapper.

Titalian, Thumper got lucky. He may have saved the day, and was aggressive, but still lucky.

What if the other guy said, "WTF are you doing? You're no cop or MTO officer. Get outta my fucking way ass wipe". Then proceeds to avoid him and causes that lift truck to fly off the handle. Enough of my rant.
