best city to live between Toronto and Montreal?

Hello all,

moving to Toronto from USA in few months. I can pretty much live anywhere in Canada but I want to stay close to Toronto due to family. At the same time, I want to be close to Montreal so I can go for weekend getaway over there during the summer. What cities would you guys recommend me looking into so I can easily reach Toronto and Montreal? Thank you.

Hey monger, I suggest you stay IN Toronto or Montreal. All the cities between will only be a poor compromise. There's plenty of good transportation between the cites.

Of course, my personal preference is Toronto.

Kingston and Ottawa are really the only true cities between Metro Toronto and Montreal and of course Ottawa is off to the side rather than in a straight line.

Ottawa has a monger scene but its no where as developed as Toronto... Kingston is a sad, narrow-minded conservative city.

Only my opinion... ymmv

Agreed that compromising to live in between is not the best.

If you speak French and/or have limited housing budget go to Montreal.
If you don't speak French and have limited housing budget, pick anywhere east in GTA.
If you don't speak French and have a decent housing budget come and join us in Toronto.

Both Montreal and Toronto are great cities to live in, that rival many cities in the world.
My heart still lies with Montreal though, but for personal reasons (I was born and raised there and most of my family resides there).
Both cities have alot to offer. In my case, I moved to Toronto because of job opportunities and also being bilingual it opened up many doors for me.
If you like more of european type enviroment or atmosphere, then Montreal would be your best bet.
There are probably no cities in between that would come close, except maybe for Ottawa, which is a smaller city and more of a mixture between the two.

In any case where ever you decide to live, these are two great cities.

My recommendations:

Toronto - If you're business focused. Business centre of Canada.
Ottawa - If you're family focused. Parks, museums, trails, very clean.
Montreal - If you're single and like to party. Nightlife is the best in Canada. Prettiest girls, mostly because they spend the effort to get dolled up.

But each is quite nice, really. I've lived in all three.

In between Toronto and Montreal, there's several smaller cities that tend to be more quiet. If I had to pick, Cobourg is very nice. Very clean, lots of festivals, big beach, wineries not too far away. For a small town, it's pretty active.

I'd stay in Toronto. Montreal isn't really that far. I do the drive once or twice a year. 5 hrs isn't that bad.

Montreal is a great place to visit, but Toronto has it beat on pretty much every level.

Since the 1970's Toronto has motored past Montreal like Montreal was standing still.

Toronto is far more expensive to buy a house though, mind you, it's because Montreal never really saw the big run up in real estate prices that Toronto did in the last 20 years (probably due to the political situation in Quebec scaring away immigrants. When immigrants come to Canada, their first choice is Toronto, probably Vancouver second, and after that, probably Calgary even


As far as the original question goes - if you want the "small town" feel I would say Port Hope. There are tons of small towns along Lake Ontario where you are a long way from the Big City. Lots of people prefer this. I have to admit, there are benefits to living in a small town, or out in the country. (I could see living in the country outside of Toronto where you have a good junk of property just to be able to get away from the damn neighbours..)

Never mind cities...why the hell would anyone consider living in the Province of Quebec at this juncture? Particularly an Anglo-American? Any idea what the french culture is, or what the cultural hurdles currently are in terms of population diversity? The educational constraints that are currently in place? Healthcare? Economic outlook which may affect the housing market and business investment? I'd advise you limit your search to the Ontario market, and save Quebec for weekend and summer getaways until the new provincial government has had a few years to turn the ship a bit.

Kingston . . . or nearby countryside.

It's almost exactly the half-way point, approx 275 klicks either direction.

It's a university town, which ensures a higher level of cultural/intellectual awareness and activities throughout the community.

Lots of heritage architecture. Property is inexpensive compared to either big city. You can probably buy sweet waterfront digs for the same price as a modest Montreal or Toronto home.

Recreation? Get a boat. Tour the Thousand Islands in one direction, Lake Ontario the other direction.

Maybe one of the eastern most boroughs of the GTA - like Ajax/Pickering/Oshawa. All have GO Train station stops so you can get to downtown Toronto easy without dealing with the traffic. More affordable and big houses. Also shave probably 45minutes to 1 hour off your trip to Montreal so it's an easier trip.

Montreal is more European and has more of a social life, Toronto more business. I find Montreal also prettier. But local french don't like english or foreigners much.

I make my money in Toronto, I have fun in Montreal.

If you're looking for a place to live between the two, why not Coburg.

Live the closest you can to work....if you work from home, live the closest to where you want to play...transportation in Toronto is a bitch.Montreal is only 5 hrs away if you want to go... anywhere outside of Toronto is travel time EVERYTIME you go anywhere....
