They are unconfirmed reports that the plane was shot down. The Russians will have some explaining to do if it's true.

They are not having any luck lately..... If this is part of the conflict there somebody's got some explaining to do...
Wow, horrible!! I think time has long past when the ICAO should divert airplanes around the airspace of Ukraine. There are some pretty dangerous weapons floating around there, with some pretty incompetent people operating them. I think this will probably be an accidental shoot down. Very tragic. From FL33...chances of survival are pretty close to zero.

 I'd say that's highly unlikely.

Such an action would pretty much force countries who have otherwise stayed out of Russia's way, with regards to Ukraine, to take a more forceful opposition role.

so... its an accident?...or purposely trying to flex muscle in Europe?...maybe not on purpose..but the timing is horrible , since the russians just shot down a Ukrainian military plane which killed dozens on Wednesday

I haven't been watching the news.

Have they discovered this particular plane?

Is it in friendly territory to enable an objective investigation?

Putin probably will blame the west on this... and run from the truth, like a coward
+1

It really doesn't matter who fired the missile. Putin started this whole mess and is responsible. Not that it will make any difference.

Souls lost for no reason. RIP

The U.S. FAA has already banned U.S. flag airlines from overflying the area (not that there are many, if any flights by US airlines which normally do).

Fuck. Don't they dispatch interceptors first before they launch those SAMs?

If it was Russia and not the separatists, this was gross incompetence. The aircraft had a filed flight plan Russian air traffic control should have been expecting it, it had a transponder which was giving all of its information. As to a MANPAD supposedly the latest Russian weapon has a ceiling of 230.

apparently the FAA also warned both Ukraine and Russia about their conflicting air traffic controllers..saying it could lead to possible accidents ... btw i got that quote from the twitter acct. of US ambassador to russia

If this holds true and it was a Russian missile... I hope the world finally wakes up and gets serious with Putin - completely innocent victims - there is no excuse.

Missile launchers are not accidentally, activated, targeted and fired without authorization. Putin is a control freak. He would have authorized the shooting down of Ukrainian military aircraft last week - those were not accidents or mistakes. I truly don't believe it would have been a Ukrainian missile, their opponents are on the ground not in the air, and they have no reasons to antagonize the Russians by shooting down Russian aircraft.

The soldiers (probably drunken) who shot down the Malaysian Airways flight likely fucked up and I'll be happy if shit finally rains down on Putin for this. Enough of the word games.

Just heard from a pilot friend who works for a middle east airline based in the U.A.E. They have had instructions to avoid the airspace over the Ukraine ever since the conflict started. The bosses at Malaysian Airlines should be terminated.
