I rear ended somebody, and their bumper needs to be replaced. They contacted their insurance company, and now I am worried if my insurance will be canceled.

1)How much will my insurance rate go up?

2)Will I get demerit points?

3)Does the amount of damage have an effect on how much it goes up? It was relatively minor, and I was only going a few km/h. We were both waiting at a red light, and I can't believe the damage would be 1k. Their was hardly any mark on his bumper.

4)Will I be canceled?

I asked the driver to contact me directly so we can work it out, but he reported it anyway.

Any advice/help would be appreciated.

were you surfing terb while driving?

hehe. Nope.

It was a really nice day, and so I decided to roll down all my windows and open my sunroof. I traveled down a street, and after a while it got too hot, so I turned up the AC and rolled up all the windows. I looked at the rear right window, and it was so clear, that it still looked rolled down and open. I thought the power windows switch might be broken, so I tried again, and looked at the window. Then BAM! I slammed into the car ahead of me.

If the police come they automatically charge you with careless driving - 6 points !

If they didn't show up , and believe me you are better off if you just go to a collision reporting center but your insurance may go up.

Happened to me , mine did not as I am allowed the grace of 1 accident.

So if the police are not called, you don't get demerit points? But if they do, you get cited and get 6 demerit points? Wow.

Will my insurance be canceled?

If you can avoid reporting centre, you have a chance of you insurance NOT being affected, but if you report, party's over, even if you don't make a claim, your insurance company will find out sooner or later. And this will lead to higher rates.

Insurance in Ontario is criminal!
If you were wearing a condom and it did not break, it should be OK. Done it lots of times.

my two cents

if you have a "free" accident on your policy they will still jack up insurance if you get a ticket

so fight the ticket

just the delay in the jack up is worth the cost of a ticket fighter charge

You rear ended them, if you don't have a witness you are at fault. Ok no LE involved, Ask the person to get an estimate on the damage to their vehicle at the dealer.
And to get back to you. Let them know you will pay for it personally, if it is within reason. I'm very sure they will cooperate, they themselves do not want to involve their own insurance company.
If you see that its way over what your willing to pay, then involve the the insurance companies. Also check to see if you have a clause in your insurance policy, that states a (first time pass)
which means your rates will not be affected, if you decide to claim, Which will repair your own car as well, with no reproductions. Do your homework.

They already went to their insurance company. They didn't want to deal with me personally. Damage was about 1k for a very minor bumper dent. Just hope my insurance doesn't get cancelled.

You are one of those people follow too closely, inch by an inch even at stop and go traffic! I always take easy when driving, even in stop and go traffic, I leave a big gap in front of me cause there is no point tail gating, you aren't going anywhere faster!

If you pay out of your own pocket, the insurance company will not raise your rate. The rate is determined by any claim against your policy. If you did not get charged with anything, and if you pay out of your own pocket, you shouldn't have to worry. Contact the other driver and try to settle without the insurance getting involved in any payments. I got rear-ended three times, in three different vehicles over the years, and the other drivers settled on a cash basis directly to the body shop, so that their insurance rates would not go up.

Between $800 and $1500 is reasonable, depending on the vehicle. I wonder why they didn't ant to deal with you directly.

our wonderful system pretty much allows anyone to drive if they can afford insurance.

Depending of course on your previous driving record.

Don't plead guilty or pay any fines, until you get a free consultation ... ie for the same cost as a fine you can pay X-copper or Points to get the charge reduced to something "minor" rather than a "major" offense like careless.

Insurance companies care if you're convicted of a major driving offense and careless is one of them. Your rates will go up if you're convicted.
Pointts are fuck-ups who grab your money, based on experiences with a relative of mine who had to deal with them.

He was a very elderly man, who wanted to do things "the right way". I even offered extra money that the amount he quoted, but he declined.

Your insurance should not be cancelled and that is bullshit about being charged with careless driving.
