No cats died or survived the Titanic sinking, because they were not carrying any. Ships often carried cats for good luck. In the days of the pirates, they would not sail without a cat. If the cat went over board and disappeared or died the crew would see it as an omen of bad luck and desert the ship when it docked. The expression "the cats is in the bag" comes from sailors going into port and securing the cat in a bag so that it would not escape the ship.
