There are 97 players in the 2014 Masters field but here, courtesy of a nine-step eliminator based on historical precedents, is your failsafe guide to determining who will be wearing the green jacket come Sunday evening.
‘NINE STEPS TO HEAVEN’
1. In 80 years, no amateur has ever won the Masters.
(6 eliminated, 91 remaining)
Golfers eliminated: Oliver Goss, Matt Fitzpatrick, Chang-Woo Lee, Jordan Niebrugge, Garrick Porteous, Michael McCoy.
2. No Augusta rookie has savoured Masters victory since Fuzzy Zoeller defeated Ed Sneed and Tom Watson in a play-off in 1979.

3. Augusta’s Arcadian fairways have in recent years been no country for all men. Indeed, the past 14 winners have all been under 40; the last 40-plus winner was Mark O’Meara, then 41, in 1998.
(29 eliminated, 44 remaining)
Golfers eliminated: Thomas Bjorn, Ángel Cabrera, KJ Choi, Stewart Cink, Darren Clarke, Fred Couples, Ben Crenshaw, Ken Duke, Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, Stephen Gallacher, Thongchai Jaidee, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, Bernhard Langer, Sandy Lyle, David Lynn, Phil Mickelson, Larry Mize, Mark O’Meara, José María Olazábal, John Senden, Vijay Singh, Craig Stadler, Steve Stricker, Tom Watson, Boo Weekley, Mike Weir, Lee Westwood, Ian Woosnam, YE Yang.
4. A first-time PGA Tour winner at the Masters is an extremely rare phenomenon. Since 1948, there have only been two – Bernhard Langer in 1985 and Charl Schwartzel in 2011.
(9 eliminated, 35 remaining)
Golfers eliminated: Jamie Donaldson, Victor Dubuisson, Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño, Branden Grace, Peter Hanson, Matteo Manassero, Hideki Matsuyama, Francesco Molinari, Thorbjorn Olesen.

(7 eliminated, 28 remaining)
Golfers eliminated: Russell Henley, Hunter Mahan, Graeme McDowell, Louis Oosthuizen, Ian Poulter, Webb Simpson, Kevin Streelman.
6. Twelve of the past 14 Masters winners had a top-50 finish at the last year’s PGA Championship. The two majors might be eight months apart, but form can clearly carry from one season to the next.
(13 eliminated, 15 remaining)
Golfers eliminated: Ryan Moore, Scott Stallings, Sergio García, Brandt Snedeker, Tim Clark, Gary Woodland, Bubba Watson, Charl Schwartzel, Luke Donald, John Huh, Nick Watney, Lucas Glover, Trevor Immelman.

(9 eliminated, 6 remaining)
Golfers eliminated: Sang-Moon Bae, Keegan Bradley, Jason Dufner, Rickie Fowler, Bill Haas, Dustin Johnson, Martin Kaymer, Rory McIlroy, DA Points.
8. There is a pattern of peaking at the right moment. Six of the past 13 Masters winners had a PGA Tour victory earlier in the season.
(Four elimated, two remaining)
Golfers eliminated: Adam Scott, Matt Kuchar, Marc Leishman, Juston Rose.
9. Perhaps the most astonishing statistic in golf in 2014 is that of the past 21 major championships, 15 have yielded a first-time winner. That rules out Zach Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, and leaves your champion-in-waiting as Australia’s Jason Day.
(One eliminated, one remaining)
Golfer eliminated: Zach Johnson.
And your winner is: Jason Day.
