Toronto Maple Leafs 2013/14 Season

I posted before this losing skid that I didn't think the Leafs playoff chances were much better than 50/50 and even with the troubles they've had, I'm not prepared to wave the white flag yet, not even if they lose the next game against the Blues, which is one of the real contenders this year. The rest of games will determine the Leafs playoff fate and if Bernier can come back with some of his best performance that we've seen, their chances are still good. I don't think that's (Bernier's A game) too much to ask for.

If the Leafs do miss the Playoffs, there'll be enough blames to go around, from Nonis to Carlyle, to Clarkson, Reimer, Bernier, Phaneuf, Gardiner, Lupul, Kadri, and to lesser degrees the rest of the team.

Randy Carlyle pulled a boner when he said Reimer was "just ok". Goalies are sensitive types, they eat quiche washed down with a good Virgin Mary like the rest of us. You know what's like when the boss doesn't have your back, you're always second guessing. With two young defensemen they Leafs were always going to struggle. The worst mistake the Leafs could make tonight is to start Bernier, if he aggravates his slats we're fucked.

IMO that's bull.... I thought Carlyle's "just ok" comment was used deliberately by the media to create controversies. Reimer
was less than "just ok" IMO and to blame anybody else for his shaky play, that's pathetic.

It might just be coincident, but Reimer's troubles seemed to have started after he was ran in one of the west coast games. He was terrific in relief of Bernier for two periods, but had gone downhill after he was crashed in the next game.

It's easy to lay the blame thick on much of the team. Reimer indeed let a couple soft ones in once again. But in fairness, how many odd man rushes does Toronto defense want to give up?
More then once I saw a NJ devil break in all alone. Yes, that is when Reimer should come up big, but come on and stop pinching. Only then with the team stop getting caught. Phaneuf is sliding back into a non existent role. Too much watching/standing, no big hits.

Like RC or not, he has a system. When its followed, it works. When its not followed to the letter, the outcome is messy.

But the positive is there. Toronto best player is Kessel, and despite the score in NJ, he played 100% every shift. Heck, I thought it was #93 out there at some points. Bolland will get better each game, the top line is trying and the team is looking better then the CBJ or Wings. Telling you though, if one more person on my facebook feed posts a pic from mapleleafssuck.com , I'm gonna unfriend them lol

Its been a bad few games, but Ranger/Bernier are day to day not out for the season. The defense tightens up a little, the rest will come together. Have faith my friends!

I wouldn,t say their playing better than Columbus, or Detroit. Detroit kath, with all their injuries? that team is playing unreal. wait til Saturday nite, they,ll give trawna all they can handle.

I recall making a few suggestions for the coming off season, which I remind you is coming whether the Leafs go four rounds or miss the playoffs entirely.
If by some miracle the Leafs win the Cup in 2014, I will still want to improve the team for next season.

I think the media has treated him well and fairly.......as opposed to coach and GM. They gave him few enough starts that A) it was hard for him to stay sharp and B) each time he did play the pressure was intense as he was always on a short leash. No room for error for him.

By the time Bernier got injured Reimer's confidence was already shot (and we are now seeing the results) and it wasn't because of the media.

I totally disagree. Carlyle's comment was that "he played o.k.. Just o.k.". What is wrong with that statement? It was the truth. Was he supposed to lie and say he played great? If Reimer can't handle an honest assessment of his play by his coach then he is not an NHL calibre goaltender.

Everyone was whining that Reimer needed a chance to get back in there and get a string of games to re-establish himself in the fight for number one. Well guess what? He got five games and gave up two or more softies in every one of those games. The argument is over. Bernier is the clear number one.

The fact is that Reimer can't catch, can't control rebounds, has a GAA of close to 6 in the first period of the last five games, and has won 4 of his last 17 starts. That is not Carlyle's fault. It's on Reimer. He is not a starting goalie in the NHL. Last year was a shortened season and he had some limited success. Everyone in the front office knew what he was which is why they looked for an upgrade at last years trade deadline and then acquired one in Bernier.

The playoffs are gone if Bernier is not back and in form and yes a large part of that failure is because Reimer has played poorly.

Bernier is supposed to be back tonight pending clearence from the training staff, I say give him one game off remember Dominic Hasek and his groin problems because he came back to soon all the time it became a career injury for him.

First period over. 2-1 Blues leafs goal came on a power play. I can't watch the game but blues out shooting leafs 23-7. I'm thinking the blues are all over them.

Even if they wanted to, I'm pretty sure Bernier's contract prevents them from sending him down.

He could refuse to go down, but there's nothing in his contract preventing the Leafs from suggesting it.

Totally agree. But none of those things demonstrate at all that the media has given him a hard time. Nobody, including Reimer, denies that he has not played well. So, if the media says he hasn't played well, that is not being hard on him. They are just reporting a widely accepted fact.

If he wasn't so likeable and the fact the media realizes he was jerked around, they could have been much, much harsher given his recent play when he had a chance to prove himself and help the team more. The media have been very fair with him.

The Leafs were desparate alright but not good enough against a finely tuned stanley cup contender.
