There is a sister restaurant of Dragon Pearl. At dinner time, Dragon Legend near Woodbine and Highway 7 is also very good. Mandarin is nothing compare to Dragon Pearl or Dragon Legend.
Absolutely! Dragon Legend is all that and a bag of crispy (______)!!!

Fantastic food and great looking place. Reservations highly suggested.

Stay away from Mandarin. Blech!!

Toxic waste that will rot your body and soul.

The Imperial Buffet in Ajax is way better than the one in Scarborough. Tried both locations several times for both lunch and dinner. Scarborough location disappoints each time, Worse than Mandarin @ Birchmount.
Why did you think that Ajax was better? I've been to Ajax Imperial for dinner and was underwhelmed. The selection was smaller than Scarborough and the chopsticks were...sticky. My fave location is actually Etobicoke. But that's a trek out of the way for me these days.

There is a buffet place on north east side Markham road and Ellesmere. They seem to have more dishes that true asians prefer rather than the North American style food that Mandarin has. Only been there once for dinner. Smaller buffet than Mandarin but food is fresh and seems busy.
I know that place. It has a $4.99 lunch deal on Tuesdays!? It's a dive. But, surprisingly, the food isn't bad. The made-to-order noodles are actually quite good.

Dragon Pearl is ok. On the plus side, it has peking duck (boom!). But, when it serves lobster, you are limited to only one. Kinda defeats the purpose of AYCE. Especially when you can buy lobster at $3.99/lb retail these days.

Having been there once and with all the restaurants in Toronto, I don't understand why anyone would choose to eat there.
Why does anyone eat at McDonalds, Swiss Chalet, or any other corporate big box restaurant? Mandarin is exceptionally clean for a buffet and because of the volume you're always getting something that's pretty freshly cooked.

I've never noticed a lack of Asian customers, or a lack of customers of any given ethnicity at Mandarin. Of course it's not authentic or traditional but a great many people like that sodium-laden fattening stuff once in a blue moon regardless of their ethnicity. Sometimes the "fake" junk hits the spot. I'll bet you would rather have a North American style pizza rather than the traditional Neapolitan pizza.

As a kid I loved going to the Mandarin but I went 2 years ago and the food had way too much salt for my liking. I was surprised I enjoyed it so much as a kid unless the over abundance of salt is a new thing or just that location.

I went in its original incarnation and again last year after its renovation. It was quite good. It's a bit out of the way and parking was awkward, as I recall. I liked the dim sum selection and the desserts. I recall a slushee machine too?

Thanks for the update, twister. Went there twice about 4 years ago and found the food very greasy and tasteless. Drive by there everyday and never had a second look. Now I may consider it for lunch today.

Because it's all you can eat. yes, seriously that is why.
So that's why, hmmmmmm...

The only thing worse than lame, unimaginative, cafeteria style food is all you can eat, lame, unimaginative, cafeteria style food!

Is that their slogan? :)
