Sutherland was the last minute replacement for an actor that thought the role was beneath him. That actor is rumored to be Clint Eastwood. John Wayne turned down the lead role because he did not like the cursing in the script.

Three years later in 1970, Clint Eastwood starred in Kelly's Heros with Southerland. Southerland tried hard not to bring his character Pinkley from The Dirty Dozen to Kellys Heroes. Which cause his acting to not be unrealistic and not believable.
