Ford's security violently pushed the camera man back, followed him into the crowd and pushed him again. Or punched, we can't see whether it was open or closed hand.

That looked like assault to me. Pushing him even once is dodgy. Following him and pushing him a second time is aggression.

I wondered whether Ford was using gangsters as his private security.

I did note when he attampted to escort his wife out the press blocked the way. I believe Fuji mentioned some scuffling went on.
Look, I've dealt with crowd control before. During TIFF. I'm seeing the press "pressing" a bit too much. I also noted the ones following the Mayor's wife to the parking garage continued to go after her after she requested they stop. She has NOT been a public figure in this nor has made statements. The story is there from many sources at this point.
The media circus has stopped tours due to safety concerns. That's the media they are afraid will cause an issue. They can be there. But I little respect for what is a public space is in order. From both the Mayor and the press.
Its reported that he left, came back and then pushed through the crowd again.
Probably another drunken stupor.
I think the post has another collectable gif from the moves.

I would not surprise me it he has been prescribed a something very strong for anxiety.... He seemed completely spaced out yesterday. That press conference.... It was like he was trying to remember his grocery list.

"First let me apologize again..... Then I need to call Hamilton's Mayor...... and there was something else... what was that? oh yeah, I don't want to eat that chick's pussy, I have plenty to eat at home. Yeah, that's everything for today."

I really hope he takes a few weeks off.... really soon. He's going to have a coronary at some point due to stress.

I'll give him points for owning up to a lot of shit publicly lately..... Can't be fuckin easy.

Once this shit show of mayoral term is over...... he could possibly have the going to have the greatest TV show ever.....

Council just voted to strip his powers away.
Hopefully that'll tone down the circus for a while and I can get some work done instead of following this train wreck.

Very little was actually removed. Mostly symbolic. Monday is the big one. And he has a heavy hitter lawyer in his corner. Apparently this guy is THE expert on civic law in Canada. This may wellend up in court very quickly.

The only thing that has changed is the executive committe can't be changed at this point by the Mayor. And almost all his emergency powers remain.

He has the power to issue orders, but after this vote to strip him of his emergency authority who will obey?

That is the point of the parliamentary notion of non-confidence: If the majority of the votes are against you, and you can do nothing then hanging onto office is stupid and pointless. So you hit Reset and have another election.

When Councillors are turning their backs on you when you speak and the only guy who's against removing all your powers is your brother, you're finished and should go to the people if you don't go into hiding.

Doug was all full of, "do the people's will" when he spoke, but Rob could only talk about a last-ditch lawsuit running up the City's legal bills. What happened to his "Bring on a by-election!" bluster he was so full of when the judge declared his conflict of interest had cost him the Mayor's office?

Right now the last thing Doug or Rob want is for the people to vote their opinion.

I could never have predicted that I would be pining for the good old days of Mel.

Me neither. But Mel at least had respect for opinions that differed from his own, and was willing to do the work to persuade others to his way of thinking, or to find common ground in the middle to build something that both could support. It's how democracy is meant to work.

Unlike Rob's hollow boast, Mel actually was a good salesman in the best sense of that tricky word.

If your assertion is that simply because he hasn't been charged with any crimes, then that means he has been an exemplary mayor and his conduct, both admitted and alleged, shouldn't be held against him, then you have an incredibly low standard of conduct for a public official.
It was a question, not an assertion. Please pay attention. Thank you. Sincerely, Jon .

The Mayor didn't have as much power as you think during an emergency. The various first response agencies controled their people. It was pointed out during the meeting(I watched it and the voting) this really only has to do with who is the "figurehead"(councils words) to the media. Yes there is moral authority lost(which I agree with) but very little real power. The Mayor retains the power to initiate the emergency response, or choose not to. That's the real power and they didn't try to take it away because legally they can't.

Monday is the real battle. The council, as I understand it, is going to try to defund several parts of the Mayor's office. The issue with this may be that certain duties the Mayor's office is legally obliged to continue doing that require funds to accomplish may be compromised. They can't take away the powers so it may be ilegal for them to do this.

All in all the general reaction of councillors seems to be "we hate to do this but we have to".

So now the question is this. Do we want council to have this power? To unilaterally be able to change election results in essence. Look I realize why they are doing it in this case. But I'm very leery of the concept. And I'm betting several councillors who voted these measures are too.

I wonder if some of the voting may be different on monday....not in support of the Mayor but how this civic democracy works.

They just want Ford out. The left are fairly quiet letting DMW and the right wing play Brutus putting the knife in.

I'm not sure which council meeting which you stated that you saw, but:

1) The Mayor has had his powers to declare 'emergencies' and to direct resources in response, DELETED and now delegated to the Deputy Mayor.
2) The Mayor still RETAINS the right to be a 'figure-head', albeit a disgraced one, in representing the City of Toronto at events, functions, delegations, foreign trips and other such 'figure-head roles. The council could NOT legislatively and thus legally strip him of these duties. If they could have, they would.

There are only three areas that council has the legislative, legal and thus DEMOCRATIC right to act in regards to the Mayor :

1) Emergency declaration and response given to the mayor council. (Deletion of the rights enacted by council 11/15/2013)
2) The rights given to the mayor to appoint/remove the Deputy Mayor, and members of The Executive Committee, Commissions, Boards and Agencies etc. (Deletion of these rights enacted by council 11/15/2013.)
3) The budget allocations. (The budget allocation to and resources for the Mayors office will be drastically slashed and re-allocated to the Deputy Mayor's Office on 11/18/2013).

To understand the rules and thus a pillar of DEMOCRACY, you first must be informed of them. Wise words both for Rob'n'Doug and Ford Nation acolytes.

You seem to forget that council is elected, and is exercising the powers they were elected to exercise. A better question is why we even have an independently elected mayor. Why nor eliminate that election and have council elect one of their own to be the Mayor, similar to the way Parliament chooses the Prime Minister.

That would avoid the crazy, dysfunctional situation we have now where council and the Mayor hate each other. Council could simply choose another of their own to be Mayor.

This would in the end lead to party politics at the council level. If you think the cat fights are bad now......

Ok you are correct about point 1. My initial impression during the debate was that was not on the table.

Point 3 is on Monday. My point initially stands and may end up in court. The Mayor has a heavy hitter with his lawyer. Could get very interesting.

Cat fights?

All but 1 blowhard councilor and 1 strip-naked Mayor versus the rest of council could hardly be classified as a cat fight. More like democracy at it's finest.

For the life of me, I just cannot fathom how you guys are so dead set against DEMOCRACY.

I wasn't thinking of the present players. This was a hypothetical. There is already an unofficial NDP and Conservative presence. Make if offical with full palimentary rules and its my opinion the partisanship quota would rise.

This is the part about Ford. Always says he's standing up for the taxpayers but now he promises we'll have to pay a fortune. What an arrogant hypocrite.
