Feel free to keep quoting studies out of context. The only interesting data in that survey is the one out of Czech which is well studied and believed to be the result of severe communist repression of religion in Czech, as opposed to Hungary. So many commentators don't believe it represents a "free" movement towards atheism rather the social after effects of severe repression.
Damn, Christians got a taste of their own medicine.

Repression of freedom of conscience is bad no matter who is doing it.

Of course killing a local priest in Siberia for what some guy did in Spain 400 years before makes a great deal of sense.

That is a terrible analogy, and again shows fundamental ignorance of modern christianity.

It is perfectly possible to be a committed Christian, believe that jesus is son of god and all that good stuff, but say, for example "The Epistle to the Hebrews is probably a forgery, not written by who it said is was, is not an Epistle and is not really directed to the Hebrews."

It is more accurate to say that such a Christian who does not accept the entire Christian Canon literally, is like a scientist trying to sift through good and bad data to find the truth.
That's completely absurd, you have little understanding of Christianity.

"Do not think that I [Jesus] have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke or a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished." (Matthew 5:17-18)

Christians believe that the Old Testament is the word of God, yes it's true that many Christians today conveniently filter out the parts of the bible that they don't like or don't agree with, the cherry picking that David alluded to, but it doesn't change the fact that Jesus stated that ALL words of the Old Testament are divine. On top of that, if Christians didn't believe the Old Testament were divine, there would be no Christianity and there would be no New Testament. The earliest Christians for at least the first century of Christianity were Jewish, Jesus was Jewish too, it's impossible to be a real Christian without believing the Old Testament is from God.

Anyways, enough about the Old Testament, let's focus our attention on the New Testament. Jesus declares the mustard seed to be the smallest seed of the Earth (Mark 4:31), oops, the only problem is that it's not, if Jesus were divine and all knowing how could he make such a basic scientific error?

Now you are getting bizarre and inaccurate. Most scholars believe that Christianity spread very quickly amongst gentiles not Jews. In fact if you read the NT you can see that in Paul's comments on circumcision for instance. They are in Acts if you care to learn.

Jesus said a number of things about the prophets and OT, you have cherry picked one of them. Would you care to show us the others and put them in context or discuss them? But let me take it one step further, the OT laws and the covenant, were always for the people of the covenant and not the rest of the world. Even in the OT this is clear. The OT doesn't say gentiles should do X, Y, Z, but that people of the covenant should. To make your point, which is completely inaccurate you need to find a scriptural basis for someone, anyone saying that the laws of the covenant should apply to non-jews. I will wait for you to do so.

The mustard seed example is really silly, but it does demonstrate a fallacy that many people make about the OT and NT. Neither is a science or biology text, or math text, or physics text, or an astronomy text. Jesus does not declare the mustard seed the smallest seed in the world, he is making a point about a mustard seed being quite small, yet having the potential to grow into something quite large. It is proper, poetic language, not a science text. Do you apply the same approach to everything you read? If so, you have a significant problem. If a comedian makes a joke about a fat woman who sits "around the house" do you really think she sits around the house? If this is your idea of textual criticism or engaging the issue, you are pretty disappointing.

Of course Christianity spread very quickly amongst gentiles and not Jews, the Jews have always had a small population. Christianity started out as a small sect within Judaism, at the time of Jesus there were the Pharisees, the Saducees, the Zealots, and the Essenes. Jesus was believed to be part of the Essenes sect, and Jesus along with his early Jewish followers celebrated Passover and other Jewish holidays. It was not until the second century AD where the followers of Jesus made sweeping changes and rid themselves of Jewish practices. One of the main reasons Christianity is alive and well today is because Constantine instituted Christianity as the state religion of the Roman Empire, and it eventually spread across all of Europe.

You say that I cherry pick Jesus' sayings, which may be true, but so do you, which is exactly my point. The OT and the NT are both riddled with contradictions. You can find one verse where Jesus is quoted as saying one thing, and in another he says the complete opposite. The question is why are there so many contradictions, and why are there so many scientific errors? Is God really that sloppy, unorganized, and ignorant of the laws of nature, or is it because man had the only hand in writing these texts, and because man is known to make contradictions and errors?

I'll let those who are free thinkers come to their own conclusions.

Much earlier in the First Century. Many of the passages in the Gospels which have been misused for persecution of Jews date from the period when Christianity and Judaism were firmly separating, as everyone should know inter-familiar disputes can be the very nastiest.

Further, Christianity was a major force in the Roman Empire before the Emperor Constantine. Perhaps you should really take a look at "From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians"

When is a reduction is more

Your problem FAST is that you don't want to think outside your hate.
What’s with you and this “hate” shit,…you definatly have a SIMPLE one track mind that can’t come up with anything more intelligent than this same old crap.

I posted multiple sources, all scientific, about why this is a short term trend, and why all the long term indicators show religion is gaining across the world. Then you abandoned that thread for some unknown reason.
:frusty: How many fricken times do I have to tell you, that I am commenting on the REDUCTION in % of the religious,…not overall numbers.
Common sense would tell you, that if the population is growing in a country that has some religious ,…chances are the total religious numbers would increase,…absolutely brilliant, when you “think” about it.

There is no doubt, nor has anybody denied there has been a significant blip in North American "nones" but their growth has come to a virtual dead stop in the last few years.
BULL SHIT,…how the hell can you say that a blip has occurred, when the poll ended,…LAST YEAR,…???

We also know that being a "none" likely means you also believe in God.
That is so revealing of the religious, to be able to make ANY word, fact, poll etc,. etc,. what ever the hell they want it to mean.
How the hell could the term “none religious” magically mean that a person is religious,…that’s utterly ridicules.

I have the feeling that when you read any document that even suggests disagreement with religion, your eyes glass over, and your brain freezes up.

In fact the Editor in chief of Gallup, has just written a book called "God is Alive and Well" that argues exactly the opposite of what you are saying.
So now your saying the Editor in chief of Gallup is telling the truth in his book, but lies in his poll ???

Feel free to keep quoting studies out of context..
I take it that this is your idea of “quoting studies out of context.”
Fact,…Drop in Religiosity Index ,…global 9%,…

WIN-Gallup International GLOBAL INDEX OF RELIGIOSITY AND ATHEISM - 2012
Page 5 of 25,...for those with short attention span.
RELIGIOSITY IS HIGHER AMONG THE POOR:
Example… People in bottom income groups are 17% more religious than those in top income groups.
Fact,…the poorest countries in the world have the HIGHEST rates of religious.

RELIGIOSITY IS LOWER AMONG COLLEGE EDUCATED: Example…College educated are 16% less religious than those without secondary education.

Holy shit dud,…talk about cherry picking,…your really getting desperate !!!

nowhere
There . . . .

Don't we all feel better now?
No. No we do not. You tell us to cut the religious crap, then post a series of pictures designed to make even an avowed atheist concede that there is indeed a benevolent and loving God. You... bastard!

So your saying this poll was conducted by militant atheist's,...your being comical,...right ?

FAST
If the data is misleading which I believe it is then it can serve the purpose
of propaganda irrespectively of who conducted the poll.

On the surface it seems believable for China to boost the largest proportion
of atheists in its demographics given that it is officially an atheistic communist
state. But I found a number as high as 47% improbable in light of its cultural
history.

Unlike the Christian west and many other ex-communist states the traditional
religious beliefs of the Chinese were not rooted in the influence/indoctrination of
organized religions. Belief in the spirit of ancestors, of the dead and belief inand
respect of the spirtitual force of heaven and earth were deeply ingrained in the
Chinese culture throught pretty much its entire history. Supernatural elements
are ubiquitous in classic Chinese literature (such as Romance of the three
kingdoms). Atheism was unheard of from eminent Chinese philosophers. Teaching
of Confucius did not reject gods. Lao Tzu was deified and worshipped. It is
true that the communists persecuted religion fervently. But the Chinese was
never receptive to organized religion anyway. In fact there was a history of
hostility towards Christian missionaries from the time when Christian faith was
introduced to the Chinese peasants near the end of imperial China.

As China is catching up with the western world some of its traditions
like the ritual of bowing to the heaven in a wedding ceremony are rarely
in practice. But there is no evidence pointing to that being a result of
a drift towards atheism rather than progress of modernization.

Personally I see a rise of atheism as a good sign. For progress of civilization
to run its course humanity eventually has to relinquish its childish belief
of them living under the watch of some unknown being in the sky, a remnant
of ancient superstition in my view. I just think it is too good to be true to find that
kind of enlightment to be the result of living under a government known
for its oppression of the freedom of speech and religion.

In today's world, religion only thrives in poor, uneducated countries, and countries where there's censorship and religious police. Most religions of today have evolved to be peaceful, with one notable exception that has troublesome violent extremist factions, so although I don't believe in these ancient manmade religions, I don't think have a problem with people believing in their manmade religion as long as it remains peaceful.
