In my (somewhat limited) experience, the dancers will try to get you to pay the maximum. But as a previous poster stated - haggling is the name of the game and if you aren't prepared to do that, then you're going to get hosed.

I'm a SC guy, but I'm not a fan of paid extras from a menu for that very reason. In an ideal world it SCs should be as far as the dancer and the cutomer want to go on a $20 per song basis, with no artificial ceiling on service. Many dancers-that-are-dancers (even if they happen to offer other things) are already doing a decent job of approximating this. The not-a-dancer-dancer is the bane of my SC experience, especially since they tend to give crapdances, not lapdances, when you turn down the menu. The not-a-dancer-dancers also usually have the worst attitude.
With that being said:
-A bar environment is pretty normal for most guys (compared to MPs, and a lot of Incalls).
-There is a very low commitment / planing level to go to a SC. At worst you know you'll get drinks and naked women.
-You can more easily take friends / acquaintances to a SC.
-You can kill an evening at SCs. Interacting with lots of interesting dancers / folks, and drinking.
-If you're just buying dances you're doing that in $20 increments, with little commitment.
-It doesn't take that much work to get 'more than dances' if you 'want more than dances'.
-You never suffer door shock, which is common if you don't plan in other parts of the sex industry.
-You can also walk out the door with no drama.
-The type of LE troubles you're likely to have at SCs are different, less stigmatizing, and more easily avoided.
This helps make SCs less intimidating for some people. SCs are a different beast. One of the biggest problems with SCs is when they forget that.
