In real life situation turn and walk away from trouble may be the best option; but in that game they were lining up shoulder to shoulder and if Kessel turned and tried to skate away, he risked being grabbed from behind, or to have Scott chasing him around the rink ? How would he look to his teammates and the fans ?

The three exhibition game suspension (for the second slash I'd say) was more a reward than punishment as Shannahan wouldn't want to validate the goon-on-skill-player tactic with any regular game suspension.

There were some second guessing on Carlyle's decision to put Kessel out in that situation. While his intentions (to defuse the situation and not to risk having a mismatch ) were good, another player like Kulemin who is not known for fisticuffs might have been wiser than risking your best player.
I will never believe that it is better to swing your stick at a player than to try to avoid the confrontation if you do not want to fight. It leads to too many possibilites that will never be good for the game.

Agreed. The problem for Kessel now is with his actions against Scott and a couple of two handers he used against the Flyers (which Shanahan brought up during his hearing) he will forever be branded as a repeat offender should he use his stick again, which means next time he will get a more severe punishment. He will have to be careful in the future as some teams may send out someone to goad him into a stick retaliation.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed defenceman John-Michael Liles on waivers ... The curse of getting paid too much in a cap world is it may result in you playing in the AHL . I do like this GM's negotiating abilty when it comes to re-signing their players .

Can't feel sorry for him, he will make more money in just one year in the minors than I will make in my entire lifetime. He better be buying his teammates dinner every day, I heard that DiPietro did that when he got sent down. I wonder if this contract will be the last of his NHL career, can't see anyone signing him when it expires and he's 35 years old. I'm a little bit surprised that no one took him, I thought Calgary might, they have a lot of cap room and a pretty sparse talent pool, and like I said already, Burke liked him enough to give him that huge contract.

Leafs got him for a pretty good price on this current contract for sure. Hopefully they have enough money to keep decent players around him, I don't know enough about how much the cap will increase for the next 8 years. $8 mil seems a bit on the high side but he's been consistent, I think he'll get 40 goals this season. Wonder what they'll do about Phaneuf, can't see him getting the same money that he's getting now and I also can't see him getting a pay cut neither.

the Toronto Maple Leafs & Phil Kessel are putting the finishing touches on an 8 year contract, in the neighbourhood of $8,000,000 per season.
OMG! That is Art Ross and Hart Trophy territory. Will Kessel ever win the Art Ross and/or Hart?

Morgan 'The Kid' Rielly makes the team, if only for nine games. We will have to wait and see what happens at the 10 game mark.
Carter Ashton likely until Clarkson can return from suspension.
Troy Brodie likely until McLaren is healthy.

Leafs used to look like Team Euro a few seasons ago are down to 2-3 non-North Americans.
Kulemin, Gunnarsson and when he is called up Holzer.

I also read the rumour today that they might rework Phaneuf contract. More years (at less pay of course) which might help the CAP.

LORD HELP US ALL if they extend Phaneuf!
I hope they resign him, but understanding the NHL is a Cap league at a bit less money and absolutely no raise.

49ers vs Rams(NFL) tonight.

Leafs vs Wings preseason Friday night.

Leafs vs Wings in Toronto Saturday night.

Sunday is NFL day.

Interesting comments from Kessel last week when he stated he will not talk contract until the up coming season is over. The Leafs are going to have to try and figure out if he wants to resign or leave as a free agent. I think he's going to leave, he would much rather play in the States and the fact he won't even say whether he would consider staying speaks volumes.
Not so, an interview in last weeks Sun sports, he did an interview while attending a leaf charity golf tournament, he stated in the interview he will not talk contract until this season is over and wouldn't comment on staying other than "it's been enjoyable since I've been here" Yes it's the Sun's reporter speaking but I have no reason to not to believe that's what Kessel said in the interview.
The story and interview was done by Rob Longley and appeared in the Sun sports on Aug. 27th. It's title was "Kessel still unsure about future with Maple Leafs".
Kessel leaving is just my opinion, he's American and really doesn't like the spotlight too much which is what he's under all the time. I'm just betting he would rather continue his career elsewhere. Time will tell whether my prediction is true. I'm betting he goes to Detroit.
Well so much for your hoping he would leave Saxon.

Kessel will likely be signed before puck drop tonight(if he is not already). Maybe they are waiting for the right time to make the announcement.
