We really don't want that freedom ....
You mean doing not whatever you want with your phone since you bought it? Here's a "feature" for the next iPhone: rent it from Apple for $50 per month on top of your cell phone plan. Better return it in pristine condition or those blue shirts will come after you.

the hobby needs more capitalism
Why the animosity towards someone buying a new phone. I like getting a new one every couple years, and I'm going from 4S to 5S. How does that make me one of the "fanboys must go out and buy the latest and greatest"? Although I like how you do admit it is actually the latest and greatest lol.
Zing!

Interesting how the Android OEM's won't honor the warranty if they can confirm the device has been rooted or unlocked.

Many many stories like this online.

That's true with just about any product not just technology related or Android or Apple. Modifying a product you purchased to behave in a way the designers did not intend, usually voids the warranty. Warranties especially the extended ones are basically useless since they cover limited types of failure or the the chance of them happening is remote.

At least you have the choice of significantly modifying an Android product to your liking and some companies embrace it. Yes, it voids the warranty, but those companies give you the ability to mod the device.

Between Android and iOS, I think both OSs provide smilier functionalities and features in their own way. But for me, Android has really ugly looking UI where as iOS 7 looks very refined and visually pleasing looking OS. Sexy sells for me. :)

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the thriving mod community Android has specifically CyanogenMOD. Unfortunately, Apple users will never taste that type of freedom. To the uninitiated, the world of modding opens up huge possibilities for Android like running the newest version of the OS on old devices, features that the original Android team never even dreamt to add, and so on
As I said earlier, to each their own hobby. Some would just rather pay for a BMW M5 supercar that you just push the button and voila 560 HP! Others like to spend
their free time tinkering with their cars, or Android phones.

I don't think every single one made the purchase based on OS. I'm sure more than a few chose whatever was cheapest or purchased whatever the salesperson told them to buy.

Apple will continue to hold onto its luxury niche. the question is will productivity apps become dominant in Android one day forcing companies to adopt Android as standard platform rather than iOS?

You can also get "BMW M5 supercar" Android phones that you can just "push the button and get 560 HP" too. You can tinker with iPhone or Android and it's optional. The only difference is that you can tinker like crazy with Android where you're more limited with the iPhone. You can also run Android on virtually any device because it's an open source meaning all developers have access to the code and can freely experiment. IOS is a closed system and only Apple decides what devices it goes on.

What a silly conclusion. That's like saying 80% prefer PC computing. Really?

The only conclusion you can draw is that 80% use android.

How many users of cheap android phones would choose apple if money was no object?

How many chose based on brand?
