Why is everyone busting saxon's balls? He said from the start its only his opinion. He brings up valid points about Kessel's reluctance to talk contract until end of season. He's a huge piece of the Leafs' offense, but I think they should trade him because if they don't, they risk losing him for nothing.

To say that they lose nothing because they can just sign another free agent with the salary space his departure creates is not a very good argument. Everyone knows that high profile free agents are way over priced. Take a look around the league at the players that are signed to long term contracts that are killing their teams.

Thank you for your support. lol. Kessel may stay in Toronto but if he elects to test the market he will no doubt get several offers that will just drive up the price, which is exactly what his agent wants after all it's his job to get the maximum $ for his client. He may resign with the buds but the price will be a lot higher than if he signs an extension. Typical tactic employed by agents. Let the guy hit the open market then see how desperate the home team gets to resign. That is if he wants to stay.

The fact that Kessel does not want to talk contract during the season is a big red flag for the Leafs. It suggests that at best Kessel is ambivalent about extending with them. He seems to dislike the constant attention he gets in Toronto. I've read elsewhere he is best buddies with Ryan Suter, both of them being from Madison WI and that Kessel might be happy to sign on with the Minnesota Wild. If that is what he is thinking, why should he show his cards at this point?

If he doesn't want to negotiate an extension now, I'd trade him right away, or at least at the trade deadline. Otherwise, you risk losing him for nothing.

Unless you have spoken directly to him , how you can say with certainty that he wants to test the market?

Minnesota sounds intriguing. He did play for the Golden Gophers and it would be like going home. Same reason why Parise left the Devils, he wanted to play at home.

very possible - after this season, Heatly ($7.5M) and Pomminvile ($4.5M) come off the books, the cap goes up and the owner seems willing to spend

Ya your right .. Maybe some loyalty from the Leafs GM who once drafted him ie let him see some action and so other clubs may want to pick him up ...

It is a perfectly good argument unless you are claiming that Kessel would sign with the Leafs for significantly less than he could get elsewhere.
The Leafs will have to pay him roughly what he could command on the free market if they hope to sign him, especially given the fact that there will be no negotiations and potential added security.

Of course unrestricted free agents can command a premium.
Look at what the Leafs had to pay Kessel and give the Bruins.
