I will say so far it looks like they overreacted.

But we gotta wait to see what CCTV streetcar video shows, if the suspect made some type of charge towards cops they are justified in shooting because their training dictates so
Yes they are if that's the case but still. You think from afar they couldn't shoot at his leg and take him down after he falls. He's on a streetcar, they are below on the street. Get two or more cops to go for the legs.

In Toronto, our SWAT team is actually called the Emergency Task Force or ETF. The team from Flashpoint are trained not just in special weapons and tactics (ergo. 'swat') but with special words - to diffuse a situation.

Don't beat cops go target shooting once a month at least? I would if I was a cop.
There's no requirement for them to shoot that often, though they're free to do so, on their own dime. Police only have to requalify, once a year, shooting like 50-60 rounds from 7-25 yards. That's a basic day at the range for your average civilian sport shooter, so much for superior training.

we should shoot all violent suspects then
Yes - and shoot them before they become real threats. I'm guessing the actors of Flashpoint would have a better chance of containing the situation.

I'm guessing the cowards that did panic would have used RPG, tanks or called in an airstrike if it was available to them.

BTW: I think we have some great Toronto cops out there but like any organisation, bad apples can slip through. In this streetcar incidence, I could have got 6 street hoods from the Jane & Finch area with guns who would have handled this situation exactly the same. This is anything but the professional take down worth the money and training we put into this police force.

I would take the opportunity to train to be an expert. You need all the expertise you can get in these dangerous times.

Nope. Most of them know next to nothing about their firearms and aren't interested to learn.
Are you serious? I'd want to be the most proficient so that if a true situation was encountered, I'd be that more confidant in its use.

Seems that way.

It appeared like overkill. IN this day and age of phone cams, etc., they will be under the microscope more and taken to task.

If you were obsessive about guns, that would be a psych point that leads you to NOT BE HIRED as a cop.

YEAH.... what happened to Tazer??? I didn't think they could shoot a guy that didn't have a gun.
They did tazer him...at the end...after they fired 10 shots at him first...

Rosemary Pimentel, who lives on Bellwoods Ave. a few houses down from Dundas St. W, witnessed the shooting. She said that she heard what sounded like a taser being used after the shots had been fired. http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2013/07/27/man_dead_after_police_shooting_on_dundas_streetcar.html

Baron said he saw the man being tasered after the shots were fired.

I won't bother to read through 8 pages of opinion...But here is mine. When a cop orders you to put down your weapon...you do it. Maybe in other countries they don't listen to the police. My parents who were born and raised here as was i, always told us to listen and obey the police. Period. You don't get shot hat way.

Not sure how you are equating this situation to immigration...

Anyway, the guy pulled out a knife and exposed his genitals to passengers - clearly he was unstable.

Most law abiding people, no matter what "culture" (following your line of reasoning) they are from are both very respectful and fearful of the police, or anyone in a position of authority for that matter.

Criminals (or unstable nutjobs) who don't listen to orders by security or cops, can be anyone from any culture.

This fellow was from Syria. I'm only suggesting it is possible they may have a different level of respect for the rule of law and those that enforce it. Nothing less and nothing more.

I'm also pretty sure if he had been tazered and not shot, then we would be hearing about why was he tazered..and that maybe they should have just spoken nicely to him instead of using the tazer.

I guess crime doesn't pay. (my parents used to say that also).

I'm talking about regular training or target shooting. That doesn't make anyone obsessive about guns. So the less one cares about their firearm and shooting skills, the better the cop? You think the cop who took 10 shots was proficient in the use of his firearm? (Proficiency doesn't mean that he wouldn't first try to diffuse the situation).

Police is overpaid and has too much power. They get away with almost everything. This time they have gone a little too far - the whole city is in uproar about this.
