Who was the only pitcher to start, (exactly), 100 games in an American League season?
Babe Ruth. Actually, my math was a little bit off.
In 1918, as a member of the
Boston Red Sox, Ruth started 89 of the 105 games in which he played, including 19 games as a starting pitcher, 57 starts in the outfield, and 13 starts at first base. The next year, he started 106 games, 15 of them as a pitcher.
I never said he was the starting pitcher in 100 games in a season, I said he was a pitcher who started in 100 games. Ruth pitched a combined 300 innings in 1918-19, so it's not a trick question, only a trickily worded one.
In a similar vein, what major league pitcher pitched in more than 100 games in one season, logging more than 200 innings pitched that year?
