If the money had actually gone into govt coffers I wouldn't have minded this one. The fact that most of it went into the stores pockets was the part I hated.
And yes I use "green" bags and did before the "tax" came in.

I didn't mind the five cent fee, but a ban would have been retarded.

I often pick stuff up from the grocer on the way home from work and don't often have a bag with me.

I find that I have miss grocery bags which I use as liners for my waste baskets at home. Now I have to buy plastic bags which I use for kitchen waste so I'm not sure how practical the ban was in my case. The plastic bags also cost a fraction of a cent so the grocery stores must have loved it.

A lit bit of a biased source but a good source of information about the reality of plastic bags: http://www.plasticsindustry.org/files/about/fbf/myths+facts_grocerybags.pdf

Me too. I would still buy a bag now and again to use for garbage.

OTOH, I obtained a re-usable back for 1.00 from Staples and did most of my shopping with it and I was a little more environment conscious due to the ban.

This whole bag ban thing was totally stupid since you could still bag your groceries in the clear product bags with no charge. I occasionally grab a whole bunch of those clear bags for pet waste. The only garbage that you need to put in a bag are kitchen scraps, and pet shit since they're wet and smell. Everything else can go straight into the blue or grey bins without a bag.

does that mean that loblaws and metro will stop charging for bags?
Metro in Mississauga is charging for bags. I switched over to T&T for much of my shopping, no charge for bags, cost is lower and the quality of the produce is higher. The Wine store was charging for bags, but stopped charging some time ago. Maybe too many old guys were shitting up the staff about having to pay for a bag.

...a ban would have been retarded.
Good we have someone at Toronto city hall that is willing to stand up, take the heat and insults, and say no to the silliness.

Yeah the T&T up in Thornhill started charging for bags when Loblaws took them over, up to a couple weeks ago they were still charging.....

Metro sucks , they charge as much as loblaws but have cheaper quality. I just go to nofrills or Highland farms that has great produce and veg.

Yeah....... Another nice win for Mr Ford. Fresh on the heels of the garbage privatization savings report!

I had a problem..whether it went to coffers of not. Basically it was another government ordered....tax...fee..whatever you wanna call it.

nice to have their hands out of our pockets.

No Blue...the Mayor put the final stamp on it today.

Council can still Appeal...assuming they can get 23 votes.....but surely Adam Vaughan and company cannot be that stupid.

Of course, or Councillor Gordie Perks is now blaming Ford for some phantom debacle over the bag ban.

I kind of feel sorry for Gord Perks. This is what the Mayor wanted....The taxpayers wanted.....all along. See no reason for Mr Perks to take a swing at Ford.

Food Basics, Metro and Weston/Loblaw continue to charge since the announcement 8 months ago.

I don't remember ever paying for bags at No Frills before the law came into effect as one poster above claims.

Even the Asian Stores in Brampton still charge for it.

I think there is nothing to change their mind and they'll continue to do so.

Weston stores pulled in millions in bag fees so no incentive to stop charging really.

The unfortunate thing is this law was not well thought out in that all proceeds went into the coffers of the businesses.

I have reusable bags that I use if I go shopping on weekends.

I usually stop off from work during the week to pick up stuff and take public transit so I don't lug reusable bags around.
