Hoffman's last movie was The Graduate, he was not confident that he can convince the producers to hire him to play a street bum so he asked them to meet him at a street corner. The producers arrived for the meeting but Hoffman was not there, a street bum bothered people on the street for a half an hour before Hoffman introduced himself to the producers. He got the job.
