With the stunning success of the Galaxy S III, there is an obvious interest on what is the new Galaxy going to be like. Samsung plays their cards close to the vest similar to Apple but there have been leaks so I thought I would start a Thread to collect information/rumours as they become available.

- Galaxy S IV - the name. The number 4 is bad luck in much of Asia and in Korea is sounds very close to the word death so there is a good chance the name will not follow the previous format.

- The processor will be 8 core Exynos 5 with an 8 core graphics interface. This will give it an ability to run high end games.

- a 5-inch 1080p display is in the works.. This isn't a surprise as Samsung's competitors already have similar products and it's unlikely Samsung will be left behind.

- The next-generation could be equipped with the foldable display unveiled at CES. This could mean a handset that won't easily break.

- a 13-megapixel (1080p video capture) rear-facing camera and a 2-megapixel front camera capable of 720p video capture for video chat.

- Wireless charging using Qi standards to allow a consumer choice for wireless charging. Coffee shops could offer wireless charging for Qi phones in the future.

- Release rumours from late Feb to May and some suggest that it will follow the next Android major release : Key Lime Pie

What I've read so far....

'Next generation' Samsung smartphones to ship with Visa NFC payment system

Samsung is introducing it's own PayWave payment app that combines the flexibility of Apple's PassBook with the NFC capability of Google's Wallet. They have inked a deal with Visa (not sure if will help us here) and it will be rolled on Galaxy IV . Fortunately, existing Galaxy 3 has NFC capability so we will be able to benefit through software.

Has anyone here actually done a NFC transaction on their Galaxy 3? It's a very successful phone, there must be millions of them in users hands (don't know the exact number) and many people here I'm sure have this phone... anyone?

Also, it was my understanding that the Samsung app basically does the same thing as Passbook (we've been on this ride before), in this case it relies on bar codes instead of NFC... is that incorrect?

They are doing it the US but Wallet isn't available in Canada because Google hasn't concluded any agreement with the Canadian banks or mobile companies yet. There was a way that you could fool the system and a few guys were using them in NFC terminals successfully but Google caught on and stopped it. The only active NFC system now I think is BB.

The Samsung system incorporates both PassBook and Google Wallet using NFC. Samsung are feeling their oats now - not only are they competing with Google on their own offerings but have introduced their own server to compete for corporate accounts against BB. I'm pissed that Google has taken their sweet time addressing the Canadian market with Wallet so the competition brought on by Samsung is quite welcome.

Will be interesting to see if anyone posts a real NFC transactions... I'm pretty close to the mobile payments space and NFC is stuck in the starters blocks... not that it will always stay there. I had a meeting this am with a very senior person at a Canadian bank - they said that while they will continue to focus on mobile services payments (NFS especially) if off the table because there are no standards and they don't see any way to make any money at it..

Your friend is out of touch with reality - BB is up & running with NFC payments. NFC terminals are now wide spread.

Links:

CIBC Mobile Payment App now available for BlackBerry : http://tinyurl.com/d2q4q8u

"The CIBC Mobile Payment App will be accepted at the tens of thousands of Visa payWave™ and MasterCard PayPass™ contactless terminals across Canada and around the world." : http://tinyurl.com/b9bo3qp

So the hardware is in place and most current smartphones already have NFC capability so when the software for Android rolls out - we don't have to run out to buy new devices - just download a new application.

Then one would think, with CIBC having a good share of the market, and Canada being the last surviving first world domaine for Blackberry's, that there would be posters here who have actually done a NFC transaction.

This person isn't my "friend" they are a CIO at a Canadian bank...

and the greatest and latest magical device does not have NFC:thumb:
NFC has been a bust so far.... Won't always be that way but people will be buying a Galaxy 5 before there is any real volume.

From http://www.theverge.com/2013/2/27/4035064/samsung-wallet-app-apple-passbook-features

When we asked why Samsung did not include NFC tap-to-pay features in Wallet, the company said that retailers prefer barcodes over NFC because they don't have to install any new infrastructure to support it.
Hmmm.

Far from it.....I've been using NFC daily since I got my Galaxy S 3.....NFC payments are not the only reason for NFC enabled phones or devices. When I got my phone I also picked a package of Samsung Tec Tiles and have used them to control phone features in my home, car and office. unbelievably easy and convenient to use and they work with ANY Android NFC enabled device. simply get the tiles from Futureshop or other vendors and download the free app from the playstore.

Last weeks MWC also showed of many other ways to utilize NFC right now....Here is a link to a few examples 15 non-payment uses for NFC

As far as transactions go I probably won't use it untill Google Wallet is available in Canada, but NFC is available in many locations

Oh and BTW back to the original topic of the thread the Galaxy S 4 is being announced at a NYC event on March 14.

This is about RFI tags replacing bar codes - a totally non-related issue. I have been involved with this as an addition to other options on our equipment for inventory management. RFI tags are now being pushed by Walmart with support for pharmaceutical companies because of ease of inventory and security. Obviously retailers aren't running out to support this new technology (i.e. RFI readers) but it will come as the technology becomes ever so cheaper to implement.

Retails don't have to setup a new infrastructure to incorporate NFC transactions- it is part of the credit card payment /verification system that and no different that the phone verification system used previously. NFC terminals are now being rolled out by both Visa & Mastercard - (they are not waiting for Apple engineers to figure out how to put it in their iPhone).

This person isn't my "friend" they are a CIO at a Canadian bank...
This CIO is from what bank ? This CIO is so out of touch, he is denying that a current service offering does not exist ? It is almost as dumb as geologist stating the world is flat. You are talking about either a very stupid CIO (probably old) or a fraud. Follow the links - your 'non-friend' is suggesting that an established BB and CIBC NFC service doesn't exist. Quick get him over to Apple !

While NFC mobile transactions are limited (but exist) in Canada - it is following a current worldwide trend -: 'The Pay-Buy-Mobile initiative supports the use of the Single Wire Protocol, which was adopted by ETSI* as a standard in October 2007, to link the Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC) contained within the mobile handset with the phone's embedded Near Field Communications (NFC) chip. The NFC chip can communicate with existing contactless payment systems to deliver a wide range of secure, interoperable and transparent services, such as credit and debit payments. There are 35 mobile operators with 1.3 billion customers participating in the initiative.
SOURCE The GSM Association (GSMA)

All of this NFC negativity is simply an excuse to try and justify Apple's iPhone inability to provide NFC capability to their phone. NFC doesn't just limit itself to commercial purchases, I can instantly transfer contacts, files, photos, etc to or from my phone. Like LTE - Apple is the last one to the dance.

That's a cool idea, I remember reading about that here several months ago.... perhaps my statement was too expansive, I should have said NFC has been a bust for payments.... still, no one has made a single NFC transaction? Odd.

Low tech solution. Why not use geofencing?

Yes they have - just because people aren't responding to your post doesn't mean the NOBODY has done it ! Do you think that the transactions illustrated in the paper articles are a hoax similar to the moon landing ?

I don't consider it a low tech solution, I see it as a simple convenience!

From what I know of geofencing(not much) I don't see the same flexibility and your battery sucking gps must be active. I enter my home, tap my tile, gps is turned off, wifi is turned on,screen brightens etc.

with geofence you create a perimeter where an action takes place when you enter or leave the perimeter....from what i've read it's most widely used for tracking employees, notifying someone when the employee enters a restricted area or leaves early etc. I also heard stores can send you messages(advertising/spam) when you enter their range. that right there turns me off from using geofencing.

but as I said my knowledge of your high tech solution is limited. perhaps you can enlighten me?

Sure.

I use an app called Tasker when I'm on Android. It allows me to assign profiles with actions and tasks based on locations or set to specific times if your schedule is static.

When I'm in the office, Tasker tells my phone where I am and it automatically disable bluetooth, turn on wifi, set screen brightness and so on. In fact, it allows me a very deep and robust ability with regards to automation. I've never experienced spamming like you described. And the battery decline is marginal. But if you're concerned about battery life, you can set around dates and times.
