How much loyalty to Canada and the West do you have? It certainly seems when given a choice you come down in favor of Iran, and indeed any anti-Western power.
Can you even be sure groggy is not posting from somewhere in downtown Tehran?
Some of his comments, ideals and blatant hatred for capitalism and Jews have made me question "How does this guy survive in Canada without getting into a world of trouble?"
Quite possibly, does not even live here, just dropping by to spread some middle eastern charm

And he is concerned about American propaganda

Right...the need to escape from homicidal loons who had stormed an embassy was not real...
Homocidal? Yet no one was killed.

Gentlemen, but wasn't it the USA who approached Canada about having fake Cdn passports done up and using their embassy/ambassador to shield hostages?

Not all hostages were released this way either, correct?

It was my understanding that Canadian diplomats had a plan to get them out posing as a Canadian agricultural group and had arranged for the passports

I didn't think the movie was that great anyway - few of the characters have any depth and that chase scene was ridiculous. I can't imagine why it won an Oscar except the American jingoism might have influenced some...

The problem would have been what on earth were Canadian agricultural experts doing in Iran in winter. Mendez knew what he was doing.

One can scratch one's head about a number of "Best Picture" winners: Oliver rather than The Lion in Winter? Shakespeare in Love rather than Saving Private Ryan? Rain Man rather than Dangerous Liaisons? Crash rather than Brokeback Mountain? Or for that matter Fargo, Citizen Kane, Psycho or The Shawshank Redemption none of which won.

Yes (more or less Canada knew that the CIA was doing to use fake Canadian Passports and said why? We will allow the use of real Canadian Passports - which required a special Order in Council).

using [the Canadian] embassy/ambassador to shield hostages?
No that was done on the fly by those in Tehran

Correct, besides "The Canadian Caper," some women and minorities were released by Iran in an attempt to play the usual cards. Most everyone, however, were held hostage for 444 days.

So the Canadian 'rescue' wasn't Ken Taylor's own brainchild? At that time, all Canada had was the RCMP, not CSIS, and the Americans certainly have more experience/resources for such covert operations.

However, they knew nothing about agriculture - much easier to teach someone the little they needed to know about the movie business than the much more they would have needed to know about agriculture. Further you may have forgotten that during the early days of the revolution there were a great many fired-up under-employed University graduates in any number of fields that were Revolutionary Guards including folks with Agricultural degrees from U.S. Universities - not, however, movie folks.
