The Americans could have taken Berlin but they stopped because the cost would have been 80,000 casualties. Plus, there was a huge risk that innocent German civilians could have been hurt, especially those 14 year old boys carrying rifles.
Kind of amazing that a handful of tiny countries with very limited natural resources came so close to winning a battle with the rest of the world.
Almost as amazing as a tiny island nation conquering half the known world. Or, a bunch of Mongols marching on Vienna. Or, Alex the Great (they call him the great because of his 14" cock) conquered the great nation of Persia and Egypt and then rolled all the way to Afghanistan where the Taliban beat and killed Alex.
Sobering video. However, the allies needed an unconditional surrender to make sure the legend that came out of 1918 didn't arise again - that they hadn't really lost, but had been stabbed in the back by those who surrendered. Hitler opted to die rather than surrender.

Once the Nazis came to power they began cracking down on the "decadent" aspects of Berlin. Especially the burlesque clubs and gay district (not surprising since Nazism is for the most part a Conservative/reactionary movement). Homosexuals were one of the first groups to be targeted (even before the Jews).
Our loony liberal lefties would say that just because the Germans killed 28 million Russians is no reason for the Russians not to treat the Germans with kid gloves.
There is a book titled "The Last Battle" which said the Americans halted their advance because of the potential high casualty of taking Berlin and the risk that a few "innocent" German civilians might get hurt in the battle.

I will also say that it is amazing how the city is rebuilt but keeping much of the city old world charm.

I was just curious since you live in Berlin, are German school kids taught everything about WW2 and the holocaust in Germany, or just parts of it?
I will never believe that Americans would give a fuck about civilian casualties when fighting for worlds dominance.
Not the way I learned about it in school. But I guess you know best. Might want to check those pesky facts though.

The most moral people in WW II were the 6 million Jews who died in the gas chambers. They rarely if ever killed anybody, never tortured anybody, never staved anybody, never hurt any innocent civilians, never bombed any cities, etc.
