Never owned snow tires and never have I got stuck in snow on a major road. I had a sports car with low profile tires during the winters of 2006 and 2007 and the only time I got stuck was on the street in which I lived. You just need to know how to drive in the stuff. Don't start in 1st gear, easy on the gas pedal, throw into neutral during skids, don't slam on the brakes etc..

I agree. However, how does this advice help you on the 400 on glare ice and a tractor trailer loses control in front of you?

would you be safer on the 400 in glare ice and a car lost control in front of you ? based on numbers and facts that i have looked up in the past cars are to blame for wrecks way more than cars. you are more likely to have a car spin out in front of you, that is safer though i guess.

when i first got my pick up this summer i had to put tires on it for a safety. for 4 all seasons and according to the price sheet i looked at it was a 20$ difference per tire between all season and summer tires. total price balanced and installed 750$.

While I agree that you need to know how to drive, but there's a big difference between all season and winter tires. Especially when you compare stopping distances, traction, the ability to turn and avoid a problem in snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures.

It sure wasn't hard to spot the all season equipped cars this morning!

one of the tricks I learned and practiced was to slip into neutral when sliding. I've found this effective, particularly with rwd as it helps to regain steering.
this takes the power away from the rear wheels so they no longer push

then turn in the direction you want to go

All you are saying is that if you are delicate enough, you will not exceed the limitations of your sub-optimal tires.

If you had better tires, your superior driving skills would give you an even bigger margin of safety.

However, you and other Winter Tire bashers demonstrate just how basic, primitive and misguided your driving judgement and skills are. You speak only of getting going, not getting tuck etc. When the real safety issues are getting stopped or remaining in control when faced with a situation where you have to make a quick move to avoid a collision.

Cognitive dissonance is present in everyone to some degree but to argue against the increased effectiveness of winter tires simply shows ignorance. We don't know what we don't know, and once you have experienced the difference in winter tires then you will understand.

Winter tires are mandatory in Quebec, maybe something Ontario should consider!

Snow tires or not...doesn't stop idiots off the streets...as bad as the traffic already is....a car from the fast lane decides he will turn right to avoid unplowed snow ahead. Jeez. This is going to be a long day...Drive safe everyone.

I would suggest you stay away from York mills rd east hill between Leslie and Don mills on a snowy slippery day. I was caught on that hill about 2 yrs ago and I had to drive over the road side curb to avoid a TTC bus sliding back down my way. It was fun looking all the cars slip sliding back down and hitting each other, but nothing in high speed so there wasn't much damage.

How much do 4 winter tires cost ? A couple of hundred bucks ? NOT.

You pay to have them changed every year. How much does that cost you too?

We only have a heavy snowfall once in a while in Toronto, so you are wearing out your soft rubber winter tires on dry pavement through most of your winter driving season.
What a waste of rubber hitting the road?

I would like to know how many "heavy snowfall" winter accidents happened while the vehicles had winter tires? The drivers' fault due to NOT paying attention to road conditions and thinking he/ she was GOD with winter tires. :thumb:
All you need is one accident involving serious physical harm on YOU and your whole line of thinking changes 180 degrees. All of a sudden the cost of tires seems pretty trivial.

Even a simple bump in the parking lot, hitting a curb with your low profile sports car tires (idiot) or even a minor fender bender of sliding into someone at 3 mph is gonna cost ya your $250 - $500 insurance deductible PLUS an "at fault" accident on your record.

But some people gotta learn everything themselves. The hard way.

Big104u is a typical ingoranus.

Thinks typing his Simpletonian angry wisdom in ALL CAPS makes him more credible.

Yet he fights and fights against something as scientifically superior on the basis no one is gonna tell HIM what to do.

I wonder if he realizes that everyone is laughing and rolling their eyes t his words?

LMAO @ 104 guy!

Wrong on every single count!

No puppet of anyone except my own underwear!

Don't want mandatory snow tires, but think it is a good self-preservation measure.

Have never trusted nor liked McGuinty, think the entire school teacher industry is selfishly pious, but do think the HST is an efficient tax system (the reasons of which go way over 10-4's CB radio intellect,

No debt except monthly credit cards to collect travel rewards and gets paid off every month. No mortgage. No kids.

Fail...
