I agree Aard, as much as i think Rotweiller's are great dogs, I don't see one being appropriate for his situation. Plus, he's considering getting one that is a puppy - they are tremendous athletes, with incredible stamina - so for the first 3 or 4 years, he or she will be a handful. Surprisingly, some dogs that people think require a ton of exercise do not. A Whippet for instance, only requires about a 10 minute run per day, then they are done. Whippet's are tremendous dogs. Plus they can jump about 5 feet straight up from a stand still, might be handy getting them into the cab!
You have made me curious, when you say run, do you mean a flat out run run? Like faster than a man can do? My poodle goes crazy and runs runs runs around the deck for and even before I got pregnant I could never keep up.

a Whippet can most certainly run faster than a human, they are a smaller version of a Greyhound. But they only require a park area, or small field to "release"that energy. Then they are done.

My understanding is that Whippets are more common in the UK than Canada and the US

Simon, have you considered a Greyhound? Low maintenance, loving, easy going dogs.

I have a Bospin which is a Boston Terrier/Miniature Pinscher mix and he is an amazing little/big dog. Looks like a minature pit bull. The breeds are both active but intensely loyal companions so the mix is good. Likes to walk but is happier on the chair beside you. Not yappy but will make a noise when somethings afoot, smart and easy to handle. I like that he looks like a big dog but weighs less than 20lbs if I need to carry him a ways. The most important thing, regardless of breed is the dogs individual nature. A well balanced dog of any breed will do well with you in the truck. Drop it in boot camp for a couple of weeks as soon as you get it and carry on the training once he's with you. I've known many truckers with dogs and it isn't a hardship on them as long as you are consistent with their daily exercise...

I've done a lot of travelling with a lab/sheppard. You want something that a) won't run off b) can handle being in a vehicle. (some dogs get carsick) c) if you need to get accomodations when on the road , a dog that the innkeeper won't turn you away for, d) something that won't get hip problems (sheppards are bad for that) due to jumping up and down out of the cab.

Best companion dog - few health problems, long lived, non-shedding, adaptable. Last time I flew with him, he was a rock star in the airport. Must have talked to at least 14 people who wanted to pet him.

I actually have one of these, great little dogs and good size for a truck cab.I would not go with a large or high energy type dog who will spend hours in a truck cab. Stick with a small breed. The Bichon may not be a tough manly dog but they are cute and have lots of personality, mine sleeps a lot and is fairly low maintenance but she does love to run when you let her loose.
