AFAIK, if you're rooted, you may not be able to receive updates from the OEM or Google. And if you do, the root is reversed. But, that's okay because it's Android. But it's horrible if its Apple. Ok, got it.
...
The problem with this statement is the difference between android and manufacturer/providers. Pure android (nexus) gets updated by google when updates are available for that hardware with no root needed. Handset manufacturer phones (such as samsung) have to adapt their proprietary add-ons to the latest google updates.

If you root your android, you may need to reset it to get official updates (just like with apple) but re-rooting it is easier than jailbreaking your iphone (even ignoring any warranty issues when dealing with apple). Comparing the process to 'free' android vs. apple, android is easy peasy lemon squeezey.

Android does suffer somewhat with updating older models because of the variety of hardware out there but the positive side is there are more than enough devs out there providing similar if not better options.

Neither apple nor android is for everyone but android is FAR more flexible. If that flexibility isn't an issue for you and you like apple's product, great. Of course even stock android or the manufacturers versions are just as easy to use and the latest phones are just as if not more powerful than apple's and cost less.

Whatever makes you happy.

Looks nice. Let's see how many of our resident neckbeards who are so concerned about everything being free and open flash their phones to this. =)
I don't see the issue. Both ubuntu and android are linux based.

Android is enjoying great success and it doesn't support Adobe Mobile Flash either. Maybe the issue isn't marketing but RIM's lack of technical prowess?
android does support flash for the time being. it didnt come installed on the s3 galaxy but it can be downloaded online and works like a charm. flash should be an option until more sites have html5 compatibility. too bad adobe caved to apple.

the WSJ reported that apple plans to release a cheaper version of the iphone soon.

i have an ipad4 which i really enjoy and its too bad if they release something better in to months from now. the beauty of android is that while multiple companies release phones all the time, it gives consumers many more choices.

1) I don't get how parts of Android source code is treated by Google as proprietary and confidential. Yet the whole platform is referred as open source. http://www.computerworld.com/s/arti...soft_improperly_showed_Android_code_to_expert
2) The apps on Google Play are not open source. AFAIK, everything on the Ubuntu smartphone can be complied with GCC or you can use the complied binaries.
3) I'm pretty sure the launchers installed by Samsung and others are not open source. I know Samsung doesn't release TouchWiz. Not sure about HTC, Motorola, etc.

Apple products are over rated. They just know how to market their products as cool to have, so everyone wants them. The Blackberry playbook is actually better for web-browsing than the Ipad because of flash. Unfortunately Blackberry cannot market their products like Apple.
Flash is ok now because it is still in use for many websites but tablets and smart phones are making it the way of the dinosaurs. Anyone in web development can tell you that. More and more of use are switching to using jquery as it is simply out preforms and it capable on all internet based products from desk top, to laptop, to tablet to phone. .

Samsung vs Rim vs Apple vs Microsoft... blah blah...

You don't hear BMW owners saying Mercedes Benz is done or vice versa.

All of these new phones are awesome with big bright touch screens and processing power.
Pick a phone according to your needs and attractiveness - not by what commercials or "people" tell you.

Personally I choose the iPhone 4S, but would choose the Samsung S3 over the iPhone 5.
As for Blackberry, lol, I just posted my Bold Touch 9900 for sale on here...

Yup, exactly.

Yup. You don't read about Ford owners posting online that Mercedes Benz is doomed because they're not the majority of car sales.

LMAO.

Just seems a bit complicated. I can't see myself ever buying a tablet because I can do most of the stuff on a smartphone, and if I need to do anything important I'd rather be on a laptop. I listen to all my music via phone so no need for a player, and unless you are an SP why do you need more than one phone? ;p

Apple shares drop on report of weak demand

Apple has reduced its iPhone 5 component orders on weaker-than-forecast demand, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal on Monday.

In pre-market trading, Apple stock was off almost $20 to $500.74 a share. Apple is to release its latest quarterly earnings report later this month.

The WSJ report, which cited unnamed people familiar with the matter, said orders for iPhone 5 screens for the January-March quarter are about half of what the company was expecting. Orders for other types of components have also been reduced, the WSJ article said.

The report said one of the people told the newspaper that Apple has also cut orders for other components. The Journal said it was told Apple notified the suppliers of the order cut last month.

Apple didn't immediately return an email seeking comment before business hours Monday.

The move is a sign that sales of the new iPhone haven't been as strong as previously expected and demand may be waning. It comes as the company has been facing increased competition from Samsung Electronics and other makers of smartphones that run Google's Android operating system.

South Korea's Samsung, which sells Android-based phones at various price points, has already overtaken Apple as the world's largest smartphone vendor by market share.

Android devices accounted for 75% of smartphone shipments the three months ended in September, up from 58% at the same time in 2011, according to research firm IDC. The iPhone's share stood at 15% in September, up from 14% the previous year.

Google says more than 500 million Android devices have been activated since the software's release four years ago. By comparison, Apple had sold about 271 million iPhones through last September.
