Here is another experiement: Stick your foot out at a designated crosswalk and see how many vehicles will use it for target practice.
Push button, look, point, wait for vehicles to stop, proceed. Do not simply stick your foot out.
Yes, yes all that plus make eye contact through their darkly tinted windows and flap your arms. Also, wear reflective clothing that says: "Please don't kill me!"
That's what the big flashing lights are for at cross walks. They get the attention of the drivers and tell them to stop. However, if they don't stop, it's wise not to step out into traffic until they do.
I nearly ran a cyclist over last night. No lights, no reflectors, I was turning left onto the same street as they were on, same direction, and did not see them at all until I was mid turn and they decided to pass a parked car and cut in beside me as I completed the turn. Death wish. If I twitched on the wheel slightly as I turned, bad news for them as their margin for error was tight.
I hear you but I know when I am driving that those damn yellow lights are placed too high. Why can't they be closer to eye level?
The new ones have two lights above the road and two on poles on either side of the road. They flash in an alternating pattern. I agree that the ones where they only had two were hard to spot. The new ones are also larger and brighter.
Okay due to the weather today how many show up to ride. Also how many of them die riding for someone who is already dead. These cyclists think they are pedestrians and should be treated like a pedestrian. If you go on the street you will eventually get hit.
huh? that's another ridiculous statement. the street is where bikes should be. the laws all around the world say so. what we need is police enforcement of existing laws. we don't need crazy separated bike lanes that trap bikes and will spill these trying to get out to pass a stopped vehicle. that's all. a few plain-clothes officers riding around like a normal cyclist. give out a few tickets to drivers buzzing or pushing them. publicize it on all the morning shows. the right lane is for cyclists. unless they need the left instead. then the left lane is theirs. just like any slow-moving vehicle. there. a solution for free.

I am all in favour of this. Any type of bad driving is a curse. And at the same time, and in equal measure and with equal zeal, ticket cyclists that are contravening the highway traffic act.
I was taught to take your foot off the gas only. You cruise through giving you time look all around. YOu foot is ready for the brake so you don't panic and hit the gas by mistake, and you don't not hit your brakes to possibly set yourself for being rear-end by braking on a green light.
Please give the name of the school you spoke to and I will call myself as well. I would love to hear them tell me to hit the brakes through an intersection.

Just got back from the memorial ride. I estimate about 100 cyclists on this cold freezing night. TV cameras present, probably on tonight. Peaceful minute of silence for Tom. It was an accident and now he's laid to rest. Research clearly shows slower speed limits within the city will save lives as will obeying the rules of the road. I strongly believe this city needs to make roads safer for all who use them.
I do not think that the research went far enough in its recommendations. I think we should revert to the very early automobile history of a man with a red flag walking in front of every vehicle (The Locomotives on Highways Act 1861). This would alert cyclists to the presence of imminent danger.
Taking your foot off or easing your foot on the gas petal will slow your car down. I never said to brake, only to SLOW down. Why must you be such a difficult person?
Yes, I know the rules on tinted windows and so does Mayor Ford who had his vehicle tinted recently. The window can still be pretty dark and still be street legal. Unlike you, I don't have X-ray eyes.
