I know all these killings by drug cartels usually occur in border cities... Anyone been to the capital Mexico City and know how life is like out there? Is it pretty safe or are killings and walking into gunfire just as much?

just wondering as I see two threads on here regarding Mexico, and I've been seeing this pretty fair skinned and educated grad student from Mexico (through POF out of all places). At this point, nothing would make me go visit Mexico... just don't want to take a chance with all the ruthless killings going on there

I'm from Mexico city (DF) and I spent 38 years there, I was kidnaping 3 times but I can said I had such a good luck because I'm alive and I have all my fingers and ears, many of my close friends and related can't.
As a former teacher I had to carry a gun just to defended myself. Once in my classroom a squad came and kidnaped one of my students and his bodyguard, the very next day the father got the head of the bodyguard and the ransom note, few months later the family got the body of my student, the other guy nerver was found. Mexico is so big, if you are lucky may be have a great time, in other hand... Be assaulted, kidnaped, raped and killed is an option and perhaps not in that order.

yikes... just what I thought. Do most people in Mexico live in fear knowing that anything can happen anytime? It must be such a relief for you to be living in Canada, if you live here that is

My experience in Mexico is a little different. I work for a multi-national and have been to Mexico twice, for business only. Here are some of the precautions and warnings given to me by my employer:

At the airport, only take one of the green and white cabs, due to the fear of kidnapping and/or theft. I was solicited by several other cabbies on my way out of the airport.

I was not to go out at night without an escort. Initially sounded good, but turned out to be a guy with a gun.

I stayed at a company owned compound about 30 minutes outside of Mexico city. It used to be a hotel. Fully fenced and gated. I arrived in a company marked shuttle bus. There were two uniformed guards at the gate with machine gun type automatics slung over their shoulders. Even though they knew the vehicle and the driver, they checked the vehicle and all paperwork in a very no nonsense manner. They were less than charmed by my brilliant sense of humour.

Having said all of that, on the good side, the people, food and the style and culture were all outstanding.

The retired parents of a friend live in a gated community in Mexico. Not in Mexico City itself. The CAD goes far there, hired help is cheap, the weather is nice and most of the residents of that gated community are Americans or Canadians.

Cancun, Riviera Maya and most of the turist sites are well protected. Someone asked about Mexico city and the real situation, I just shared some "normal" stuff. Anyway if u have money and follow the safety tip's, the time in Mexico should be great, it's a beautiful place with a LOT of problems.

Wow Neptuno, that is horrible. I've been waiting to go to Mexico to see the Mayan ruins at Chichenitza (sp?) but looks like my waiting will be indefinite with the way things are going over there. Too bad :(
Chichen Itza is a long way off from Mexico City - like Toronto and St John's.

CAD goes far in a lot better places than Mexico. I'd suggest Costa Rica instead.

Monterrey is nice but is becoming increasingly less safe as well.
