Maniac motorists are killing cyclists, pedestrians and each other at a record rate in 2012.

The latest death is a 35 year old grade 2 teacher (Swansea Public school) mowed down by a hit and run driver at a crosswalk. Hope they catch the bastard. Anybody who hits, kills and then drives away should be charged with murder.

Anyone know the whereabouts of Michael Bryan during the time in question?

Per Global news, 5 cyclists have died in the GTA due to collisions with cars.

Lets catch the hit-and-runner first then the charges will be laid.

Plus, another 1,200 hit by cars but survived. Don't forget all the pedestrians and other motorists that have been killed as well and the number of houses destroyed or damaged by cars smashing into them.

When I rode my bike I rode a lot on the sidewalk. Got sworn at a lot, but better than trusting the cunts out there driving.

what about the 40,000 motorist who got killed last year in the USA ?

Deaths happen on the roads, its a fact. You are at increase risk of death while out on the road.

The CBC report says that the cyclist was first hit by a red van, who took off, and then by a white van, who remained at the scene. I saw on a TV report that the driver of the white van said that the cyclist ran a red light. In any case it's sad when someone is killed in that way, and more so because a very capable grade 2 teacher was lost.
There you have it. The problem aren't motorists, its people who think they are above the law.

Murder?

Typical Rockslinger...:blabla:

The cyclist reportedly ran a red light, was wearing dark coloured clothing when it was dark out, and did not have a light when he crossed while RIDING across a pedestrian crosswalk.

Sounds more like suicide.

The same suicide the irresponsible cyclists attempt everyday in this city.

Not to make excuses for the POS scumbag who drove off after hitting a human. The guy is an idiot as now he has a criminal charge facing him when he might otherwise only have to explain what happened and not been charged IF the foregoing information about the cyclist running a red etc.

Probably some oblivious driver that didnt even realize what had happened. Unrealistic? Try riding a motorcycle in this city for a couple hours and you'll find out how clueless drivers in general are

I live very close to the Swansea Public School, which is on Windermere Avenue near St Olaves Road, (about half way between Bloor Street West and The Queensway, and half way between Runnymede and Jane).

I don't know where the accident occured, but the nearby intersection at Windermere/The Queensway is very dangerous for a number of reasons:

1) There's a tree right beside the traffic lights for pedestrians crossing Windermere, going east. The low branches and thick leaves in summer completely obscure the lights sometimes.

2) Just past the intersection, west of Windermere, there is a stop for the westbound 501 street car. A fence about three feet above curb height separates the platform from the westbound traffic lanes on The Queensway. From Roncesvalles Avenue to Windermere is almost completely straight for about a mile, with a rise at the overpass above Parkside Drive. Every year, one or two idiots think they're driving a Red Bull-Renault at Spa-Francorchamps, go full speed the whole distance, and hit the curbing by the street car stop, launching them into the air, with the fence flipping them around, so they hit the ground upside down. I haven't seen one of those incidents, but I have heard two of them. The police were there within five minutes. They could tell what had happened, and they didn't offer the driver any help while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. They appeared to have very important paper work to do instead.

3) Since the westbound street car stop is after the intersection, the street light to go north or south for disembarking pedestrians is always red, except for rare instances when the light changes colour while the street car is passing through the intersection. The light stays red for a long time, because it first has to regulate east-west traffic on The Queensway, and also allow for left turns for those coming up lower Windermere from the Lakeshore, who want to go westbound on The Queensway.

There's always some idiot pedestrian who tries to cross in the brief interval between when the light turns red for east-west on The Queensway, and when it turns green for the left turn. He has to rely on no one running the red light, and no one false starting the green.

There's always one car who starts the left turn after the pedestrian's light has turned white, and one other car that follows him in his 'slipstream'. As far as I know, nobody's been hit by the last guy turning yet, but it's pretty much inevitable that it will happen eventually.

4) The street car stop for the eastbound 501 is east of Windermere. If you are on the northwest corner of Windermere and The Queensway, you have to cross through two sets of lights, perpendicular to each other, plus cross two sets of subway tracks. If the street car is stopped at red lights east-west on The Queensway, it's possible to cross Windermere on the red, then dash across The Queensway while the light's still green north-south, or while it's red, but green for those turning. If you can avoid being hit by the street car you're trying to catch, you're able to save 10 - 20 minutes.

How do you know it's a guy who did it? Maybe Lindsay Lohan's in town.

glad to see the cyclepaths are not jumping to conclusions based on little or no evidence....guilty of murder? was he walking or riding at the crosswalk? if riding, he was breaking the law and if walking, he was a pedestrian at the time.

This is so true. I had a truck horn installed on my Suzuki. It seems to get their attention more so than the fart in the wind OEM horn.

At risk of death mostly from bad drivers. Pedestrians and cyclists kill very few.

it was morning. "quarter to seven". red light. dark clothes. crosswalk and salmon riding too (it looks like from the ctv video). if you stand anywhere in the city, you'll see cyclists/drivers/pedestrians make serious errors in judgement all the time. when two make it at the same time, somebody gets hurt. since the driver left the scene, it's probable he was drunk or otherwise. when i ride downtown or on a path, my biggest fear is other cyclists. cars i can see and most drivers don't want to ruin their day by hitting me. other cyclists don't seem to care.

I cross some pretty busy intersections everyday and always get rushed by drivers on a pedestrian light on a regular basis.

Was rushed by a douche in a Porshe 911 at Keele and Hwy 7 once.

That could have been messy as he never even stopped or slowed.

Some just check for oncoming traffic to their left and never look right to see if pedestrians are beginning to cross.

I simply let them go by as no amount of insurance/court settlement will bring back my limbs.

With the more attentive ones, I make eye contact, wave in appreciation for giving me the go ahead and then step off the curb.

The worse offenders are taxis and delivery trucks. A taxi will run you over if you are between him/her and a potential fare.

Running a Redlight does mean the cyclist bears resposibility for the accident and since it was dark when the accident occured, so the lack of lights/reflectors can be a factor as well, I don't know if this is the case but it is possible.

But leaving the scene of the accident is against the law.

Calling this a Murder is just being sensationalist given what we know.
