No matter what the field of study, not everyone who graduates in that field will end up working in that field.

Does that make it a waste of money for a college to offer that field of study?

Some people failed in their basic education, and will conclude that it is. Some people may even post threads about it on a bulletin board or on YouTube, seeing if others have failed in their basic education.

Sad. Truly sad.

Way to dismiss increased knowledge, awareness and understanding as valuable quantities. Not to mention life-skills such as self-discipline and communication. Your personal experience, and indeed those of however many other financially-successful non-college grads, does not a thesis prove. Stats are stats, whether you like it or not.

And, financial discussions aside, the quality of work-life and employment options for a degree'd citizen are going to be considerably greater than those of someone with only high school under his belt. You can drive a shovel your whole life, or move up the chain and enjoy more comfortable working conditions as you age.

Congratulations on your success without college - I'm glad you are happy. But for the most part, an education is never a waste of time, be it for financial or other less tangible reasons.

Anyone notice MSOG didn't say if he had a degree or not? It also looks like he's in very small minority again of those who think not, but he's used to it.

Although to be honest, based on his posts, he may not have the skill or education to understand what all that means. :)

Well based on those words, the person will be not improving his job prospects at all.

fijii did you actually get an undergraduate degree? Few with that attitude I knew ever graduated.

Left unmentioned by MSOG is that University is supposed to be about something more than being a trade school, it is about becoming an educated person and more importantly learning the skills as to how to find information that you don't know.

this is very true. I can pretty well tell in most cases if someone is a high school drop out, had some university, or a lot of time there.

It is harder with tech grads though. I guess it is a different experience.

Pretty much it seems high school people cannot diferentiate between what they think and what is a proven fact. It seem a universal truth. ;) <universal truth was a joke>

A number of interesting thoughts here, but these days are different than even 15 years ago. A basic 4 year BA in a useless field ( liberal arts) will not remotely assist you in obtaining a good job in today's highly specialized work force. Kirk et al state in general terms that you need to have a focus, and whether that is a college or university degree it doesn't matter. Education, formal or not, expensive or not, is never wasted. The waste comes from a lack of focus, taking a field of study with limited growth potential ( ants legs) and then hoping you will find a life long job in it. As one with both a university degree and a few college diplomas, I feel that both have their niche and value, but one needs to get life education and look closely at job trends. You also need to have the forethought to re-invent yourself or have that all important backup plan when the job market doesn't go your way.

I have undergraduate and graduate degrees. Undergraduate was way better for dating, I did the graduate while working.

And men need to learn to stop identifying them by their job. Jobs are at best fun, at worst a temporary inconvenience that puts food on the table. They do not define you.

You have a weird outlook.

First, enjoying the company of multiple women and not being a prude about infidelity does not make me either "sex fixated" nor sociopathic.

Second, having more education is no indicator that someone would be less likely to be either. Especially sex fixated.

Several years ago there was a article in the paper that said that 25% of the homeless people on the street have a college degree.
